Research history

The natural entrance to the cave was discovered by Michael Müllner in 1923. There was initially no research in the cave, as Müllner only recorded the discovery in his notes.

The main reason for exploring the cave was to search for water. Since the Hochkar has no springs, it was hoped to find water at the bottom of the cave. The first foray into the cave took place on September 24, 1963 by Werner Putz, Hubert Bruckner and Helmut Fritz. However, there was no descent into the cave because the men lacked the right equipment.

Only the Association for Speleology succeeded in penetrating the depths for the first time. At Pentecost 1964, after using 30 wire rope ladders, the layer cave was discovered. From June 5 to 7, 1965, new parts of the cave were added.

The development of the Hochkar cave was directly related to the construction of the 9.5 kilometer long alpine road by the Hochkar tourist company under the leadership of master builder Franz Geischläger. After the measurements showed that the end of the Whitsun Hall should not be far from the surface of the earth, a tunnel was built at the instigation of Geischläger. On July 29, 1965, the breakthrough to the Pentecost Hall took place. Through this artificial entrance the cave could now be reached without the arduous shaft descent of over 70 meters. On September 12, 1965, Werner Putz discovered the stalactite part of the cave after difficult climbing .

With the decision of the Federal Monuments Office of November 18, 1966, the shaft and the area around the entrances were placed under cave protection “because of its peculiarity, its special character and its scientific significance” . It is only accessible to guided tours for which you register at the Hochkar-Schutzhaus or the Hochkaralm.
