The Hochkar is with a height of 1808  m above sea level. A. the highest peak in the Göstling Alps on the Lower Austrian - Styrian border .

The Hochkar mountain range, which is around 15 km long in a west-east direction, extends east to the Dürrenstein ( 1878  m above sea level ) and is part of the Ybbstal Alps mountain range . The Hochkar drops steeply to the south to the valleys of the Lassingbach and the Salza , while its northern flank is gentler and drains to the Ybbs .

Tourism and development

The Hochkar is operated as a ski sports center in winter ( Hochkar Bergbahnen , based in Göstling an der Ybbs ) and managed as an alpine pasture in summer . The Hochkar refuge is located at 1491  m . With around 20 km of slopes and nine lifts , including six chair lifts , it is the most important winter sports area in Lower Austria.

In September 2012 it was announced that the state of Lower Austria and the Schröcksnadel Group would take over the ski area and invest five million euros in its expansion and operation over the next three years.

From Lassing (municipality of Göstling an der Ybbs ) the Hochkaralpenstraße leads to the Hochkar, which can also be used by the public bus line 643 of the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region if required .

In the Hochkar area there is also the Hochkarschacht , a shaft cave, as well as the extensive Leckermoos high moor at about 860 m above sea level. The raised bog extends over 10 hectares and is primarily dominated by yellow-brown and reddish peat moss and mountain pines (mountain pines). A hiking tour , starting from Göstling an der Ybbs , leads past the high moor, which can be circled in about 45 minutes.

In June 2015 the Hochkar 360 ° Skywalk was opened, which is laid out around the Noten, a secondary peak of the Hochkar. The highlights of the steel-made system are a 60-meter-long suspension bridge and a viewing platform that protrudes 8.5 meters above the cliff and hovers 120 meters above the abyss at the top. From here you have a good view of the peaks of the Gesaeuse up to the Dachstein

A cold snap and rainfall in May 2019 make it possible for the weekend of 18./19. May the lift and the family run will be reopened for "summer skiers" with free entry.
