The Göstlinger Alps are about 25 km long and 15 km wide Lower Austrian-Styrian mountain range along the border between Lower Austria and Styria . They get their name from Göstling an der Ybbs , the place in the upper reaches of the Ybbs , and reach an altitude of 1808 m above sea level in the famous Hochkar ski area . A. and in Dürrenstein to the east, 1878 m above sea level. A.
The mountain group, in which limestone and dolomite rock predominates, is counted to the larger unit of the Ybbstal Alps , which in turn form the eastern foothills of the Northern Limestone Alps with the adjoining Türnitz Alps and parts of the Vienna Woods . In terms of tourism, it offers numerous mountain and hiking trails with a wide view , some ski areas and themed trails from the earlier iron processing.
Its main peaks are (from west to east):
- Lärmerstange (1,477 m), Stumpfmauer (1,770 m) and Gamsstein / Hochkogel (1,774 m)
- the elongated Königsberg (south of the places Hollenstein an der Ybbs and Göstling)
- the main ridge with the Hochkar (largest ski area in Lower Austria) and Ringkogel (1,669 m)
- the lower mountains in the east with the high church (1,485 m) and the Rothwald plateau
- the Dürrenstein massif (1,878 m) in the northeast , which morphologically already resembles the dominant mountain of the region, the broad Ötscher .
Directly west of the Hochkar, the main ridge is cut through by the valley of the Mendlingbach , which separates it from the first two mountain groups. Between the Hochkar and Dürrenstein massifs, the Steinbach and Hochtal have eroded a less clear dividing line, while the southern boundary to Hochschwab and Kräuterin is formed by the water-rich, deeply incised Salza and its tributary in the Holzäpfeltal .
The neighboring mountain groups are: in the west the Ennstal Alps , in the southwest the edges of the extensive Hochschwab massif , in the southeast the Kalkstock der Kräuterin and in the east the Zellerhüte and Zeller Staritzen , which belong to the Mariazeller mountains .
