The Dachstein Mammoth Cave is located on the edge of the northern Dachstein Mountains above the municipality of Obertraun ( Upper Austria ) in close proximity to the Dachstein Giant Ice Cave and the Hirlatz Cave .

History, research and tourism

To date, the cave has been measured over 67 kilometers of corridor length and research is still going on, so that new discoveries are made almost every year. It is one of the longest and most important caves in Austria and also in Europe.

The cave, the difference in height between the highest and lowest known points is more than 1200 meters, was discovered in 1910 and opened a little later as a show cave for tourists. In summer, visitors can get an impression of the enormous size of the cave on a one-kilometer circular path. This leads through a short artificial tunnel (new east entrance) into the Lahnerhalle and then into the hall of the forgotten . From there it goes through the large tunnel-like paleotraun to the midnight cathedral . Here is the turning point of the guide way. From there on to the arcade cave and back to the Lahnerhalle .

natural reserve

In Austria, caves are in principle (ex-lege) under strict nature protection. This cave and its surroundings were also declared a natural monument in 1973 ( nd614 , nature conservation book: OÖ-64 / Obertraun). The area lies in the core zone of the UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape of Hallstatt – Dachstein / Salzkammergut  ( WHS 806 ) and in the Dachstein European and nature reserve ( bird protection and FFH area , AT3101000 / EU02 ; n098 ).
