The Griffen stalactite cave ( Slovenian Grebinjska jama) is located below the castle hill of Griffen in Carinthia , Austria . It served people as a shelter more than 20,000 years ago , but was then forgotten for a long time. It was only in the last months of the Second World War that the cave was rediscovered in search of suitable air raid shelters . In 1956 the stalactite cave was opened to visitors and declared a natural monument in 1957 .
The discovery of two fireplaces, bones of cave bears , giant deer and woolly rhinoceros as well as stone tools inside the cave proved that the Markt Griffen belongs to one of the oldest settlement areas in Carinthia. The entrance to the cave is directly opposite the parish church. It is open from May 1st to October 31st. The length of the cave is 485 m, making it significantly smaller than the Obir stalactite cave southeast of Klagenfurt . Due to its colorful stalactite formations , the Griffener Höhle is considered the "most colorful stalactite cave in Austria". During the guided tours through the show cave, which last about 40 minutes, the visitor is explained in the last part through a multimedia journey through time how the earth was formed until the very recent past. The cave has a temperature of 8 ° C regardless of the season.
