The Raabklamm is a notched valley of the Raab on the southern edge of the Passail Basin , northwest of Weiz and the longest gorge in Austria.

On the left bank and downstream of the Raab are the communities Naas and Mortantsch , on the left and right banks the market town Passail and on the right bank Gutenberg-Stenzengreith . The mean altitude is 505 m.

Flora and fauna

In the gorge there are gray alder floodplains and ravine and hillside mixed forests, which are dominated by beeches ( Fagus sylvatica ), but also semi-arid grassland and limestone cliffs with crevice vegetation. The Raabklamm offers rare and protected plants a suitable habitat; The real daphne ( Daphne mezereum ), the Turkish federation ( Lilium martagon ), the wolf monkshood ( Aconitum lycoctonum ) and the European cyclamen ( Cyclamen purpurascens ) can be found here.

According to the FFH-RL protected animal species here are z. B. the alpine buck ( Rosalia alpina ), the pygmy owl ( Glaucidium passerinum ), the black stork ( Ciconia nigra ), the peregrine falcon ( Falco peregrinus ) and the great horseshoe bat ( Rhinolophus ferrumequinum ).

The approximately 400 hectare area of ​​the Raabklamm, which is considered a river stretch of national importance, is designated as a Natura 2000 area according to the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive (FFH-RL) and the Bird Protection Directive and as a nature reserve, as protected flora and fauna Animal species occur here and the water structure of the Raab in this section is still largely natural. The utilization of the Finzen spring by the Schöckl Alpenquell water association caused a conflict with the Styrian nature conservation association at the end of 2007 , as the natural spring pool had to be fundamentally changed.
