Mortantsch is a municipality with 2184 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Eastern Styria.

Mortantsch is located on the city limits of Weiz in the Weiz district in the Austrian state of Styria .
Community structure
The municipality includes the following six localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):
- Goettelsberg (1202)
- Hafning (175)
- Haselbach near Weiz (150)
- Leska (186)
- Mortantsch (191)
- Steinberg near Weiz (280)
The community consists of the cadastral communities Göttelsberg, Hafning, Haselbach, Leska, Mortantsch and Steinberg. The community area is 17.58 km² (1,758 hectares).
history
The current cadastral community of Göttelsberg was first mentioned as Gotlingsperge in 1185. The name is said to have its origin in the personal name Gotili (n), so the assumption. Only in 1405 was the Mordensch mentioned in a document . The next mention of a village in Mortatsch comes from Leska. Leska was first mentioned in 1229. The name has its roots in Slavonic. Leska means hazel bush.
The Slavic name of this area dates from the 6th and 7th centuries when Slavs came to the country in the wake of the Avars. As a result, the Slavs were replaced by the Bavarians. The transfer took place peacefully. The Slavs and Bavarians lived peacefully side by side and the Bavarians took many names and place names from the Slavs. The town of Haselbach was first mentioned as Haselpach in 1265.
In the course of the revolution in 1848, the subordination of the peasants was dissolved and the peasant finally became the owner of the land. The first municipal council elections took place two years later.
On January 1, 1952, the local communities of Mortantsch, Steinberg bei Weiz and Haselbach bei Weiz, which had been established in 1850 and had been independent until then, were combined to form today's community of Mortantsch.

Description of the coat of arms: A golden stake sprinkled with blue water droplets in a red shield, three golden horseshoes on top of each other in front and behind.

leisure
There is an extensive network of trails that can be used for jogging , Nordic walking , cycling and hiking . Haselbach is the starting point for the large Raabklamm , Götzenbichl is the starting point for the small Raabklamm. There is also the possibility to play tennis and archery .
