Birkfeld is a market town with 4958 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Styria . As part of the Styrian community structural reform , it has been merged with the neighboring communities of Gschaid bei Birkfeld , Haslau bei Birkfeld , Koglhof and Waisenegg since 2015 . The new market town continues the name "Birkfeld".

geography

Birkfeld is located in the center of the Upper Feistritz Valley in the Weiz district in the Austrian state of Styria . Since the structural reform in Styria , it has been the largest municipality in terms of area in the Weiz district.

The municipality includes the following nine localities (residents in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Aschau (391) including Koglgraben, Koglhof, Lechen and Sankt Georgen
  • Birkfeld (1631) including Edelsee and Neudörfl
  • Gschaid near Birkfeld (868) including Am Riegl, Auf der Wiesen, Buckenberg, Glaser, Gremschlag, Hinterleiten, Oed, Rabenwald and Sonnleiten
  • Haslau near Birkfeld (427) including Hirschberg, Obere Haslau, Schoberkogl, Untere Haslau, Weizerberg, and Zepfendorf
  • Piregg (287) including Autersberg, Gasengraben and Jägerleiten
  • Rabendorf (267) including Grubdörfl, Holzhöf, Krichleiten and Reith
  • Rossegg (273) including Birnhof, Grub, Hohlenstein, Koglgraben, Naintschgraben and Wieden
  • Sallegg (88) including Kalch, Königskogl, Schustergraben and Wolfersberg
  • Waisenegg (726) including Bärenhof, Gallbrunn, Haidendörfl, Hofbauer-Wasserbauer-Siedlung, Steinbrennersiedlung, Waxhofsiedlung and Weberkogel

history

The place was in the princely Urbarium first mentioned in 1265 and received its first market rights in 1330. The municipality as an autonomous entity was created in 1850. In the same year, the facility was made a district court. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the community became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark, from 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

  • The Intermusica , an international brass music competition for soloists and their orchestra, takes place in Birkfeld every year in the first week of October .

In 1972 Gedore Austria (one of the world's largest manufacturers of hand tools) was founded with production in Birkfeld.

education

  • BORG Birkfeld , Pedagogical Panther  2010. The BORG Birkfeld offers a total of three different branches. In addition to music and art education, the school is known for its IT branch.

tourism

Together with Fischbach, Miesenbach, Ratten, Rettenegg, Strallegg, St. Kathrein am Hauenstein, St. Jakob im Walde, Waldbach-Mönichwald, Wenigzell and Vorau, the municipality forms the Joglland - Waldheimat tourism association . Its seat is in St. Jakob im Walde.

The municipal coat of arms was awarded with effect from October 1, 2009. Due to the amalgamation of the municipalities, the coat of arms lost its official validity on January 1, 2015. The re-award took place on September 1, 2015.
