The Birkfeld parish church is located in the village of Birkfeld in the market town of Birkfeld in the Weiz district in Styria . The Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul is part of the Birkfeld deanery in the Graz-Seckau diocese . The church stands on a railing and is surrounded by a tabor , the church and the churchyard are under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

In 1295 a church was mentioned in a document. It was expanded in the 16th century. The church was demolished because it had become too small and rebuilt from 1709 to 1714 with the builder Remigius Horner . In 1971 an interior restoration took place.

architecture

Church exterior

The church stands in a dominant position at the east end of the main square in Birkfeld and shows the characteristic design of the master builder Remigius Horner, which is derived from the Pöllauer collegiate church . The single nave nave is closed off in the east by three spacious conches . A square tower with a medieval core and an octagonal bell storey is presented on the western front.

On the west front of the tower there is a fresco depiction of the Mount of Olives from the 18th century. A fresco of the crucifixion of Christ on the south side of the tower has completely faded.

Church interior

Two bays of the nave have groin vaults , after the transept a transverse rectangular yoke extends the choir with a rounded apse. The sacristy door in the choir is marked 1711. Above is the oratorio . The three-axis west gallery stands on stone pillars. The side portals are marked 1710 and have a pilaster structure on the inside and outside.

Furnishing

The church has an excellent late baroque interior. The high altar from 1730 based on a design by Remigius Horner bears figures by Josef Schokotnigg and shows an altar sheet by Josef Allmer (1885) and an altar sheet by the barrel painter FJ Rickho (1740). The side altars show pictures of the Archangel Michael and Saint John Nepomuk, created by Josef Schokotonigg in 1730 and 1737. In the right apse is an excellent rosary altar by Philipp Jakob Straub (1768). The altar in the left apse bears a statue of St. Joseph by Josef Schokotnigg (1740). The pulpit (1737) was also made by him.

Ferdinand Schwarz built the organ in 1765; it was restored in 1970, 2000 and 2014. The sculptures on the case of the organ were made by Philipp Jakob Straub. The organ positive was renewed in the middle of the 18th century. A bell was cast by Florentin Streckfuß (1693).

The west portal is flanked by life-size figures of the prince apostles from the fourth quarter of the 17th century, probably from the high altar of the previous church.

Churchyard

The former Karner behind the church was converted into a small chapel in the 1st quarter of the 18th century. On the south side there is a baroque-style Gothic tower of the former fortification from the 15th century.
