Philipp Jakob Straub
Philipp Jakob Straub (baptized April 30, 1706 in Wiesensteig ; buried August 26, 1774 in Graz ) was an Austrian sculptor of German origin.
Straub came from a family of artists, his father Johann Georg Straub was also a sculptor, as were his brothers Johann Baptist , Johann and Joseph . Like his brothers, he received his first artistic lessons in his father's studio.
With his support he came to the art academy in Vienna and was there a. a. Student of Johann Christoph Mader . In 1733 Straub settled in Graz. He married the widow of Johann Jacob Schoy and was able to take over his workshop and studio. The satisfaction of his ecclesiastical and courtly clients was soon reflected in Straub's appointment as court chamber sculptor.
Between 1750 and 1752 Straub worked closely with his nephew Franz Xaver Messerschmidt .

Artistically, Straub was long in the shadow of his father; but then found his own style. Along with Josef Stammel and Veit Königer, Straub is one of Austria's most important sculptors.
