Peter and Paul (St. Peter and St. Paul) is the name of the feast of the apostles Peter and Paul . The festival is celebrated on June 29th in many denominations . In the Roman Catholic Church it has the rank of a solemn festival .

liturgy

Numerous Peter and Paul churches are under the patronage of Peter and Paul. The better known include the Naumburg Cathedral , the Klagenfurt Cathedral and the Poznan Cathedral . There is a Peter and Paul altar in Comburg. A number of Peter and Paul monasteries were also placed under the patronage of the two apostles, including Hirsau monastery . The Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg also bears this name.

Because of their outstanding importance for the church, both saints are sometimes also referred to with the honorable designation "prince of the apostles" ( Latin princeps apostulorum , from princeps 'the first, leader, prince').

Legal holidays

  • In Prussia , Peter and Paul became a public holiday in December 1796 by an order from Friedrich Wilhelm III. abolished. In other German states, the public holiday remained until the 19th century.
  • In the Swiss canton of Ticino , in some Italian-speaking communities in the canton of Graubünden and in some communities in the canton of Lucerne , Peter and Paul are public holidays.
  • The day was celebrated as a public holiday across Italy until 1976 . In 1977 it was abolished along with three other church holidays and only remained a holiday in the Diocese of Rome . In 2008, a legislative proposal was introduced to parliament to reinstate Peter and Paul Day on June 29 as a public holiday throughout Italy. The Peter and Paul Festival is traditionally celebrated, especially in Austria and Bavaria, with the Peterlfeuer . In Rome, the traditional fireworks "La Girandola" takes place at the Castel Sant'Angelo for the Peter and Paul Festival .

The weather rule "Peter and Paul hang the cherries in your mouth" refers to the fact that the sweet cherries are ripe at the end of June.
