The population development reflects the economic conditions (see also below: Economy and Infrastructure): In the first half of the 20th century, mining brought a strong influx of people into the remote area, in which previously only agriculture and forestry had offered employment opportunities, which resulted in a large number of people the population more than doubled. Conversely, the shutdown of the mining industry led to a marked and still unstoppable decline in the number of inhabitants due to emigration, so that the community only had 671 inhabitants in January 2013.

Museums
A permanent exhibition in the Kulturhaus is dedicated to Peter Rosegger . In addition, there are always exhibitions on appropriate occasions.
Economy and Infrastructure
The economic development of the place was characterized in the post-war years by the coal mine Ratten-St. Kathrein . After the lignite mining industry closed in 1960, however, many of the families and individuals living in the so-called colony were forced to look for work near and far. As a result, there was a strong emigration, and the population fell within a short time to almost half of the then 1800 inhabitants.
As a result of this serious change in the economic situation, the place changed over to a tourism industry within a relatively short period of time , which was still developing in the 1960s. Those responsible at the time succeeded in setting some accents in the tourism industry (at that time it was still referred to as summer resort ), and a reasonably well-functioning summer tourism developed. In the 1970s, a double chair lift system was built on the Hauereck , with the aim of creating a new sports and hiking attraction for both summer and winter.
As in other regions, however, this project was subject to a great deal of interaction and summer operations ceased relatively quickly. Winter operation, on the other hand, turned out to be a relatively successful undertaking and its profitability was only called into question by poor snow winters. Only when a private group was found towards the end of the 1990s to take over the lift system and were ready to make major investments did the region develop into a relatively well-known and valued winter sports area again.
Today, St. Kathrein offers the Hauereck ski region, a winter sports center equipped with a four-seater chairlift and snow-making equipment, and is a popular winter sports area for visitors from the immediate vicinity, but also from neighboring Hungary and the Czech Republic .
Tourism association
Together with Birkfeld, Fischbach, Miesenbach, Rettenegg, Strallegg, Ratten, St. Jakob im Walde, Waldbach-Mönichwald, Wenigzell and Vorau, the municipality forms the “ Joglland - Waldheimat ” tourism association . Its seat is in St. Jakob im Walde.
