Rettenegg is a municipality with 712 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Weiz district in eastern Styria on the border with Lower Austria . The municipality covers an area of ​​78.53 km².

Geographical location

Rettenegg is located in the Fischbacher Alps at the confluence of the Pfaffenbach and Feistritz . The streets coming from Pfaffensattel and Feistritzsattel also meet there . The southern part of the area belongs to the Styrian Joglland .

The north-western edge of the municipality forms the Pretul ridge ( 1656  m above sea level ) - Stuhleck , which is 1782  m above sea level A. is the highest point in the municipality. The ridge of the Wechsel also partially belongs to the municipality.

Waldbahn Steinhaus - Rettenegg

Between 1911 and 1958 the Feistritzwaldbahn operated between Steinhaus and Rettenegg, traces of the former railway line can still be found today.

Population development

The population reached its highest level of 1251 in the 1923 census and has since decreased continuously, from one census to the next by around 10% since 1971. The decisive factor was the negative balance of migration, which the birth balance could by no means compensate for (e.g. 1991 to 2001: birth balance +1.2%, migration balance −8.5%).

Religions

97.6% of the population are Roman Catholic , 0.4% belong to the Protestant Church . 1.6% are without religious belief.

Natural monuments

  • Planet path “Heaven on Earth”: The solar system is shown along a hike to the Stuhleck . The Planet Path was created as a scientific and tourist project by the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Vienna . Along the way, the nine planets are shown in such a way that their size and distance from one another correspond to the scale 1: 1 billion.

The exhibition "The old forest railway" in the Gasthof Rosinger is a permanent exhibition. Original plans (1: 1000) and photos of the former railway from Rettenegg to Steinhaus am Semmering are shown.

Right at the entrance to Rettenegg is the largest stamp in the world ( Guinness Book of Records ).
