Sankt Jakob im Walde with 1043 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) is a municipality in the judicial district of Fürstenfeld and in the political district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld in Styria in Austria .

Geographical location

Sankt Jakob im Walde is located approx. 24 km northwest of the district capital Hartberg in the extreme northwest of the Hartberg district. The community belongs to Joglland and is located at the foot of the Wechsel in the headwaters of the Lafnitz . In the west, the municipality is bounded by the Feistritz . In the vicinity of Sankt Jakob im Walde there are numerous elevations with a height of over 1000 m: Blasenkogel ( 1313 m ), Eggberg ( 1215 m ), Wienhoferkogel ( 1206 m ), Ochsenkopf ( 1191 m ), Arzberg ( 1111 m ), Lechenbauerkogel ( 1097 m ) and Rottalberg ( 1003 m ).

The highest peaks run from southwest to northeast through the municipality and divide it into two parts: the Filzmoos, which slopes down to Feistritz, in the northwest and the town of Sankt Jakob im Walde with Eggviertel, Ebenviertel, Grabenviertel, Kirchenviertel, Dorfviertel and Lechenviertel in the southwest, which falls to the Lafnitz.

history

The current municipality was around 30 BC. Conquered by the Romans and from then on belonged to the province of Upper Pannonia. In 799 it fell to the Avars and came to the Frankish Empire . When the Avars were defeated around 982, the municipality came to Carinthia and has been administered by the Traungauers since 1035 .

The village of Sankt Jakob im Walde was first mentioned in a document in 1170 and has been a parish since 1204. In the years 1529 to 1533 the municipality was ravaged by the Turks . In the middle of the 17th century, the plague broke out in the village and killed 60 people. In 1886 the church and many houses burned down.

On July 26, 1944, two American Boeing B-17s were shot down by German fighters within a few minutes . Several crew members died in the process. A memorial stone that was inaugurated in 2009 in the presence of a surviving crew member and numerous guests of honor commemorates this tragedy. In the last weeks of the Second World War , Sankt Jakob was the theater of fighting between German and Russian troops from April 7 to May 8, 1945. During that time the village was captured and burned down five times. A military cemetery was built for the German fallen.

Parish church Sankt Jakob im Walde

Catholic parish church Sankt Jakob im Walde : The parish church was built by the Krumbachers at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned as capella sancti Jacobi in 1209. When the Vorau Abbey became the mother church of St. Jakob by decision of Archbishop Eberhard II in 1217 , it was expanded into a pillar basilica . In the second half of the 15th century the church was rebuilt in the late Gothic style. After the flat ceiling had been replaced by a vault in 1663, the Franciscan Bishop Christof von Rojas y Spinola consecrated the church. The church tower was built in 1768, after the fire of 1886 the church received a new dome. In 1945 the church was hit by artillery during the war . Most of the furnishings today come from the Jesuit Church in Judenburg .
Design of the townscape: Sankt Jakob im Walde was named the "Most Beautiful Flower Village in Styria" in 1990 and 1991, and from 1987 to 1989 the community took second place in the state flower decoration competition. As part of the European competition “ Entente Florale Europe ”, St. Jakob was named “Most Beautiful Flower Village in Europe” in 1992 and was awarded a gold medal in the village category.

Due to its low mountain range, there are numerous opportunities for hiking in summer and for ski tours in winter.

Sankt Jakob im Walde is located off the main roads on the main road from Waldbach to Strallegg . The Weizer Straße B 72 from Weiz to Krieglach is about seven kilometers away. The Semmering expressway S 6 from Wiener Neustadt to Bruck an der Mur is approx. 26 km away and can be reached via the Krieglach-Ost junction .

The community is not connected to the railway network. There is no train station within ten kilometers. The Graz Airport is about 85 km away.

Overnight stays and other tourist offers in St. Jakob im Walde are marketed by the Joglland Tourism Association - Waldheimat . This association includes ten other communities in the area: Birkfeld, Fischbach, Miesenbach, Rettenegg, Strallegg, St. Kathrein am Hauenstein, Ratten, Waldbach-Mönichwald, Wenigzell and Vorau. Its seat is the municipality of St. Jakob im Walde.

In 2008, a permanent exhibition entitled “Empowered Power” was opened, which deals with the forces that surround people. The exhibition is operated by the local and infrastructure development company of the community and is located in the former rectory in St. Jakob.

Johannes Payerhofer (ÖVP) has been mayor since June 16, 2017. At the age of 25 he is one of the youngest mayors in Austria. He is the successor of the long-time mayor Anton Doppler (ÖVP).

The community board also includes the deputy mayor Johann Pfleger (ÖVP) and the community treasurer Herbert Berger (ÖVP).

The head of office is Waltraud Feiner.

Wonderful forests and meadows that let holidaymakers enjoy - the air is wonderful like nowhere else.
