The church and the cemetery are under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

In 1204 a chapel was documented as being incorporated into Vorau Abbey.

The three-aisled Romanesque pillar basilica was rebuilt and expanded in the late Gothic and Baroque periods. In 1886 there was a fire which damaged the roof and the tower. A complete restoration took place in 1910. During the war in April 1945, the spire and parts of the vault were destroyed, the furnishings were completely burned. The church was rebuilt in 1947/1948.

architecture

The three-aisled three-bay nave, the central aisle twice as high and as wide as the side aisles, is vaulted with a lance-cap barrel. Small Romanesque upper windows have been preserved on the south side. The connection between the nave and the aisles is formed by pressed arcades on squat octagonal pillars. The low side aisles have ribbed vaults with a pear rod profile from the second half of the 15th century. The one-bay choir with a semicircle has a barrel vault on a cornice. On both sides of the choir there are two-storey additions as a sacristy or side chapel from the third quarter of the 17th century with the year 1663. A square tower from 1768 with an onion dome stands above the first yoke of the south aisle. In the preserved Romanesque west wall of the nave there is a late Gothic pointed arch portal with a vestments between two buttresses, at the same time there is a late Gothic smaller south portal. The music gallery is late baroque.

In the choir is an oval ceiling fresco from the first half of the 18th century, which was later renewed.

The rectory from 1732 as a mighty building is structurally connected to the parish church with a wooden connecting corridor.

Furnishing

The institution of the church is inconsistent and was partly transferred from the profaned Jesuit church in Judenburg.

The high altar from the middle of the 17th century has late baroque additions and shows a new high altar picture of the Assumption of the Virgin . There are two fragmented 18th century choir altars. The altars in the aisles show the vision of St. Ignatius von Loyola as a reduced copy after the picture by Giovanni Pietro de Pomis in Graz Cathedral and vision of St. Aloysius around 1650.

The classicist pulpit was built around 1800.
