history
The place name Söchau refers to the Slavic history of origin, as it derives from the Slavic “sekati”, which means something like “clearing”. Cultivated soil was created through clearing. Both processes of reclamation are symbolized in the municipal coat of arms by the uprooted tree and the ear.
Already around 1160/67 the place Söchau appeared in the Rittscheintal . The place was first mentioned in 1218 when the crusader Wulfing von Stubenberg together with Duke Leopold VI. fought before Damiette in Egypt. As he repeatedly hovered in mortal danger, he bequeathed to the Order of St. John , among other things, a Hube in Sechau , in the event of his death, even the whole place (Wulfing returned by the way unharmed home). It is not known when the village was finally sold.
The church is mentioned for the first time in 1418. Their consecration to St. Veit and the fact that Söchau was called Seckau in the 15th century allows the conclusion that it could be one of the oldest places in Eastern Styria .
In 1418 the place was sacked by the Hungarians. At that time, most of the village belonged to Jörg and Heinrich von Fürstenfeld . It was followed by the Peßnitz family and, after 1741, the Herberstein family, who owned 46 properties in 1754. Little is known of the Turkish wars for the place, but the fact that the Ottomans represented a constant threat to the area is proven not only by numerous fortified structures in the vicinity, such as the Riegersburg, but also by a related legend.
