The Semmering Schnellstraße S 6 is an expressway in Austria and an important north-south connection. It begins at the Seebenstein junction with the south motorway (A 2) and leads over the Semmering Pass to Mürzzuschlag . It then follows the Mürz to the Bruck an der Mur junction with the Bruck expressway (S35). The last section runs along the Mur to the St. Michael junction with the Pyhrn Autobahn (A 9) where the S 6 joins the Murtal Schnellstraße (S 36).
With a length of 105 km it is the longest Austrian expressway. In connection with the S 36 and S 37 , it represents an alternative connection to the south motorway from Vienna to Carinthia .
General
The S 6 has the status of a motorway in terms of road traffic law and requires a vignette or toll . The state-owned motorway operator ASFINAG is responsible for operation and maintenance .
From km 45.25 to km 50.00, the S 6 runs exactly on the route of the old B 17 . Before the completion of individual sections of the Semmering expressway, today's state roads were run parallel to the S 6 as the Semmering replacement road B 306 .
A dangerous section lies between the Leoben-West junction and the St. Michael junction, as there are narrow emergency lanes and tight curve radii.
When there is a large number of visitors to the World Cup ski races on the Hirschenkogel , one of the lanes on the Lower Austrian side is closed and used as a parking lot, which leads to long traffic jams and hinders transit.

Buildings
tunnel
The expressway runs through 14 tunnels (17 km) over a length of 106 km. The last gap was closed with the opening of the Semmering peak tunnel in October 2004. Until then, all traffic rolled over the Semmering pass road, which had a traffic density of 12,000 vehicles per day in Semmering at peak times .
The Semmering tunnel chain consists of six motorway tunnels in total. These are:
- Grasberg tunnel, length: 352 m
- Eselstein tunnel, length: 175 m
- Semmering summit tunnel , length: 3.5 km
- Stone house tunnel, length: 1.8 km
- Hospital tunnel, length: 2.5 km
- Ganzstein tunnel , length: 2.1 km
The tunnel series from Bruck to Leoben includes:
- Tanzenberg tunnel , length: 2.5 km
- Bruck , length: 1.2 km
- St. Ruprecht tunnel , length: 0.6 km
- Niklasdorf tunnel , length: 1.3 km
- Massenberg Tunnel , length: 0.4 km
Since the tunnels of the Bruck tunnel chain do not meet the safety regulations, some of them still have to be renovated. It all started with the approximately two kilometer long Tanzenberg tunnel between Bruck and Kapfenberg (2007–2009). This was followed by the Massenberg tunnel near Leoben, where the north tube (directional lane Klagenfurt) was given a new inner shell with white pigment concrete. As a result, it was not necessary to apply a light coating. The renovation of the Massenberg Tunnel was completed at the beginning of May 2010. The Oberaich railway underpass followed in July 2010. In 2015 all renovations were completed and the whole project was completed.
The second tube of the Ganzstein tunnel was built by May 2008 . The groundbreaking for this took place on December 4, 2005. After the completion of the south tube, the existing north tube was completely renovated. The renovation of the old tube was completed on March 27, 2009 and the Ganzstein tunnel can be used with two tubes. This means that the entire Semmering expressway is equipped with two lanes in each direction of travel.
bridges
The Schottwien valley crossing is 130 m high and 632 m long and is one of the largest road bridges in Austria. The span of the longest part forms one of the longest concrete girder bridges with 250 m. It opened in 1989. Due to construction defects, smaller concrete parts fell to the ground before the opening, which is why it was popularly nicknamed the Brösel Bridge . These deficiencies were rectified immediately, even before the traffic was opened.
