The Massenberg Tunnel is a twin-tube motorway tunnel in Styria on the Semmering expressway (S6) between the Leoben East and Leoben West junctions . He drives under the mass mountain.

history

The 400 m long Massenberg Tunnel was opened to traffic on July 17, 1965 as part of the Leoben southern bypass. This single-tube tunnel at that time was part of the most dangerous section of the notorious guest worker route . The south portal was considered to be particularly dangerous because in its immediate vicinity three lanes had to be merged into two. The most severe collisions occurred in this area. The Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit drew attention to these intolerable conditions as early as 1971 and called for the construction of a second tunnel. This was only built in 1987 when the S6 was being expanded.

The Massenberg Tunnel was overhauled from 2009 to 2010 as part of the renovation of the entire " Bruck Tunnel Chain ". The west tube towards St. Michael was given a new inner shell with reflective, easily washable white pigment concrete.
