The Hirschenkogel is a mountain on the border between Lower Austria and Styria with a height of 1340  m above sea level. A. directly south of the Semmering Pass . The Milleniumswarte stands at the top of the mountain and the Liechtensteinhaus , a mountain restaurant, is in the immediate vicinity .

The ski area on the Hirschenkogel is a traditional winter sports area , which is marketed today under the brand Zau [: ber:] g (coll. Magic mountain ). It has 14 kilometers of slopes and is accessed by two lifts - a fixed-grip four- seater chairlift and an eight- person gondola lift . The latter is the only gondola lift in Lower Austria.

The ski area extends from the top of the Semmering pass at 984 m above sea level to the summit of the Hirschenkogel at 1340 m above sea level and is exposed to the north. A special feature is the most powerful floodlight system in Europe with 1300  lux , which was built for ski races, but is also available to amateur athletes for night skiing. All slopes are equipped with artificial snow-making systems, which guarantees continuous ski operation from December to March.

There is also a 3 kilometer long natural toboggan run ( toboggan run ) that starts right when you get off the cable car. The toboggan run, equipped with light effects, figures and tunnels, can also be used in the evening thanks to the lighting and is therefore a suitable alternative to skiing right next to the children's lift.

At the end of December 1995, the first Alpine Ski World Cup races took place on the Hirschenkogel . On the western slope , two women's slaloms were held in front of more than 10,000 spectators . In the following season there was a new edition. Starting with the winter of 1997/98 , East Tyrol's capital Lienz alternated with Semmering as the organizer of the women's races that took place shortly before the turn of the year.

Since 1998 there has been a giant slalom and a floodlit slalom on the panorama piste on the Hirschenkogel every two years . The giant slalom starts from a ramp, which means that the start is higher than the mountain top. The route partly leads over the area of the federal state of Styria, where the slalom start is also located. The destination is back on Lower Austrian soil.

The races on Semmering are among those with the largest audience in the Alpine Women's Ski World Cup, thanks to the large catchment area of Eastern Austria. In order to cope with the rush, one of the two lanes of the Semmering expressway is closed and used as a parking lot.
