Mikaela Pauline Shiffrin (born March 13, 1995 in Vail , Colorado ) is an American ski racer . She is one of the most successful runners in history, especially in her favorite discipline, slalom - in this she is the youngest Olympic champion , the first four-time world champion in a row and six-time winner of the World Cup discipline and a record winner with 43 World Cup victories. So far she has won three Olympic medals (including two gold) and five world championship titles. In the winters of 2016/17 , 2017/18 and 2018/19 she won the overall World Cup and won eight discipline rankings. In addition, Shiffrin is one of only seven athletes to celebrate World Cup victories in all disciplines . With 17 World Cup victories in the 2018/19 season, she holds the record for the most victories of the season.

Career

Junior

Shiffrin attended Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont like her two-year older brother Taylor, who is also a ski racer . She had her first successes at national level in the Whistler Cup , a youth competition for children between the ages of 11 and 14. In 2008 she won the slalom, the giant slalom and the combination there. In addition to other successes in junior races in the USA, she won the slalom for the second time in 2009 and the giant slalom of the Whistler Cup for the second time in 2010. A month before that, she had already attracted attention outside her home country when she won slalom and giant slalom at the Trofeo Topolino in Italy, the most important international children's ski race.

When she reached the age limit, she drove the first FIS races in November 2010 . In the same month it was used for the first time in the Nor-Am Cup , where it was among the top ten in the second race. After a total of three top ten placements in this racing series, the then 15-year-old won the super combination in Panorama on December 14, 2010 and the giant slalom two days later. After the turn of the year, two more slalom victories followed in Sunday River . At the end of the 2010/2011 season she took third place in the overall, giant slalom and super combination rankings and first place in the slalom rankings. She won the bronze medal in slalom at the 2011 Junior World Championships in Crans-Montana . In March 2011, she played her first two World Cup races , a slalom and a giant slalom, in Špindlerův Mlýn , in which she could not qualify for the second round. At the end of the 2011 season, she won the national slalom championship. She was awarded the Golden Ski by the Eastern Ski Writers Association as the best junior of the 2011 season.

Rise to the top of the world (2011-2013)

Mikaela Shiffrin in Andalo, 2012

On November 27, 2011, Shiffrin finished eighth in the slalom in Aspen , her fourth appearance in the World Cup, and thus won World Cup points for the first time. A month later, at the age of 16 years and 9 months, she achieved the first podium in a World Cup race in the Lienz slalom when she finished third behind Marlies Schild and Tina Maze with the fastest time in the second run . By the end of the 2011/2012 season , Shiffrin got two more top ten results, making them 17th in the Slalom World Cup. At the Nor-Am Cup this winter , she only took part in three races at the start of the season, one of which she won, the second slalom in Loveland . At the Junior World Championships 2012 in Roccaraso , she finished 20th after a failure in slalom only in giant slalom. She was able to successfully defend her US slalom title in 2012.

After another third place in November 2012, Shiffrin won her first World Cup race, the slalom of Åre, on December 20, 2012 . Two more victories followed on January 4, 2013 in Zagreb and on January 15 in Flachau . At the 2013 World Championships in Schladming , she won the gold medal in slalom. This makes her one of the youngest world champions ever; younger were only Hanni Wenzel from Liechtenstein in 1974 and Esmé MacKinnon from Britain in 1931. Before the World Cup final in Lenzerheide , Shiffrin was seven points behind Tina Maze in the slalom classification. With the fourth win of the season, she passed it and won the ranking with a 33-point lead.

Dominance in slalom, Olympic victory, second world title and injury (2013-2016)

Shiffrin started the 2013/14 season with a sixth place in the giant slalom in Sölden . She then continued her slalom winning streak on November 16, 2013 in Levi . On December 1, 2013, she achieved her first podium finish in a World Cup giant slalom in Beaver Creek in second place. Her sixth slalom World Cup victory followed in Bormio on January 5, 2014. At the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi , Shiffrin became the youngest ever runner to win the gold medal in slalom. In the giant slalom, she took 5th place.

At the beginning of the 2014/15 season she celebrated her first victory in the giant slalom when she finished the race in Sölden at the same time as Anna Fenninger . At the 2015 World Ski Championships in Vail / Beaver Creek , she secured her second World Championship title in slalom. In the Slalom World Cup, Shiffrin won five of the last six races of the season; so she was able to win the discipline ranking for the third time in a row, which Vreni Schneider had recently achieved 20 years earlier. The Swiss woman even won four times in a row from 1992 to 1995.

On November 28, 2015, Shiffrin won the Aspen slalom with a lead of 3.07 seconds over Veronika Velez-Zuzulová , the largest lead ever in a World Cup slalom. The previous record was set on March 10, 1968 when Florence Steurer won with 3.00 seconds ahead of Annie Famose . She was also able to finish the slalom, which was also driven in Aspen the next day, as the winner. After the dominant start to the season, a few days later at the World Cup in Åre she suffered a ruptured ligament and a bruised bone in her right knee. At first it was said that she would miss the entire rest of the season, but the recovery was faster than expected, with the result that she only missed five of the eight remaining slalom races. On her comeback on February 15, 2016, she won the slalom in Crans-Montana . She was also able to win the following in Jasná , as well as the one at the season finale in St. Moritz . Thus, in the 2015/16 season , Shiffrin had won all five World Cup slaloms she had competed in and finished the Slalom World Cup in fourth behind Frida Hansdotter , Veronika Velez-Zuzulová and Wendy Holdener .

Third world title and overall World Cup victory (2016/2017)

She also won the first four slalom races of the 2016/17 season before the series ended with a failure in the fifth slalom in Zagreb . It was her first failure in a World Cup slalom after four years (on December 29, 2012 at Semmering , she was fourth in the first run and couldn't finish the second run). But on January 8, 2017, their winning streak at the slalom in Maribor continued. At Semmering , she set Lindsey Vonn and Katja Seizinger's record of winning three races in three days.

From the start of the season, she took part in the so-called speed races several times, in which she was allowed to start with the number 31 due to the start number regulation. With this number, she surprised at the Super-G in Cortina d'Ampezzo on January 29, 2017 , when she only missed the podium by three hundredths of a second in fourth place.

At the World Championships in St. Moritz , she concentrated entirely on the technical disciplines. On February 16, she won silver in giant slalom and two days later with two fastest times and a lead of 1.64 seconds (the largest since Ingrid Lafforgue on February 13, 1970 at the World Championships in Val Gardena with 1.71 seconds) the gold medal in slalom . For the third time in a row, she had won the world title in slalom, something that Christl Cranz had only achieved before her in the years 1937 to 1939; it was also her fourth big title in a row (with the 2014 Olympics).

After the World Cup, she managed to win a super combined for the first time in Crans-Montana . In Squaw Valley she won both the giant slalom and the slalom, which already meant winning the overall slalom ranking. At the final in Aspen she secured the overall World Cup victory. In the duel for the overall standings in the giant slalom, however, she lost out in the last race on March 19 against Tessa Worley, who had 80 points ahead .

Second victory in the overall World Cup and Olympic champion in giant slalom (2017/18)

Mikaela Shiffrin with the World Cup ball for the 2018 slalom classification

Shiffrin surprisingly lost the first slalom of the 2017/2018 season in Levi to Petra Vlhová , but then started another winning run. In the first four races she competed, she was always on the podium - in three different disciplines. In Lake Louise , she won a downhill run for the first time, only in her fourth start in the discipline. Between January 1st and 9th, she won five races in a row. In her favorite discipline, slalom, she won nine out of eleven races. This exceeded the record of Janica Kostelić , who had eight slalom victories in the winter of 2000/2001 . Two of Shiffrin's victories, however, were won in parallel competitions that did not yet exist in Kostelic's time. No other skier has achieved more season successes in one discipline. As a result, she was able to repeat victory in the overall World Cup, although she also skipped speed races and combinations to protect herself.

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , Shiffrin won the gold medal in the giant slalom and the silver medal in the combination, while finishing fourth in her favorite discipline. After winning the giant slalom, she skipped the Super-G.

Third overall World Cup victory in a row and two world championship titles (2018/19)

In the season 2018/19 Shiffrin continued its winning streak. On December 2, 2018, she won the Super-G of Lake Louise . She is only the seventh athlete to win the World Cup in all five disciplines . And is also the only person in the history of the World Cup who can show victories in the current six disciplines; in addition to the five classic disciplines, she has also won parallel races. When she won the slalom in Courchevel , Shiffrin equaled Marlies Schild's record with 35 slalom victories and became the youngest female rider to win 50 World Cups at the age of 23 years and nine months. In Semmering, she broke Schild's record with her 36th victory in slalom and was the first woman to win 15 races in a calendar year, Marcel Hirscher also succeeded in the same year. With her 51st World Cup victory, she also overtook the legendary Alberto Tomba in the victory statistics . With her victory in the giant slalom at Kronplatz , Shiffrin achieved her 10th win of the season. This makes her the first woman to have won at least ten races in three seasons, and that in a row. Only Hermann Maier and Ingemar Stenmark succeeded in this before, but they and Stenmark are the only ones who have achieved this in series. After victories in the giant slalom and slalom in Maribor, she passed Vreni Schneider with 56 successes in the World Cup and is third on the list of the best.

In that year she also became the dominator in the Super-G: of the five races that took place in December 2018 and January 2019, she won all three in which she competed (after Lake Louise also the two in St. Moritz and Cortina d'Ampezzo); However, she deliberately left out the Super-G races in Val Gardena and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. At the 2019 World Cup in Åre , she won the opening race, the Super-G. It was her first start in a speed discipline at a World Cup. She then decided not to compete in the Alpine Combined and Downhill competitions, for which some (ex) colleagues showed little understanding, as she was also one of the favorites, at least in the Alpine Combined. She justified herself in a detailed Instagram statement and said she knew her limits and did not want to be dictated by arrogance about her expectations and goals. As a result, she was also able to defend the world championship title in slalom and thus became the first female ski racer to win world championship gold four times in a row in a discipline.

At the city event in Stockholm, Shiffrin set Vreni Schneider's 30-year-old record with her 14th win of the season, and she also won the Slalom World Cup for the sixth time, thus equalizing Schneider's record. After the downhill run in Rosa Chutor was canceled, she won the overall World Cup for the third time in a row, as Petra Vlhová, who placed second, is 719 points behind with seven races to go. At the slalom in Špindlerův Mlýn , she set a new record with her 15th win of the season. At the last Super-G of the season at the World Cup finals in Soldeu , a shared 4th place was enough for her to win the discipline World Cup in a speed discipline for the first time. After winning the slalom, she was able to set further records, so she, like Janica Kostelić, achieved eight season victories in this discipline in the 2000/01 season, was on the podium in every race in 1988/89 and Kostelić in 2005/06 and was among them 1160 points in the Slalom World Cup a new record. In the final giant slalom she celebrated her 60th World Cup victory and the 17th win of the season, which is why she also won this ranking. Shiffrin won four crystal balls this season, setting Lindsey Vonn's record. In 26 World Cup races she achieved 2204 points and thus got an average of 84.77 points per race and thus clearly exceeded the old record of Maze.

Season 2019/20

At the beginning of the 2019/20 season, Shiffrin was particularly successful in slalom, while she initially had to admit defeat three times in giant slalom. After she only classified 17th in the giant slalom in Courchevel in mid-December, she even took a short break to train. That paid off: at the next races in Lienz , ten days later, she won both the giant slalom and the slalom by a clear margin. These were her World Cup victories 63 and 64, with which she overtook Annemarie Moser-Pröll in terms of the number of World Cup victories. At that time she was the second most successful skier behind Lindsey Vonn . With the victory in the slalom in Lienz, she also equalized the record of 43 victories in the same discipline that Vonn had set in the downhill. In January she had to give up twice in the slalom to the Slovak Petra Vlhová : In Zagreb she was downright outclassed with a deficit of 1.31 seconds; in Flachau she was only third behind Anna Swenn-Larsson . At the end of January, however, she achieved two successes in the speed disciplines in Bansko with victories in the downhill and Super-G and further expanded her lead in the overall World Cup.

On February 2, 2020, her father Jeff Shiffrin died suddenly at the age of 65 as a result of an accident at home. Mikaela Shiffrin then traveled home to the United States and suspended her season indefinitely. She skipped the races in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Kranjska Gora , Crans-Montana and La Thuile and thus lost the lead in the overall World Cup to the Italian Federica Brignone . She announced her return for the races in Åre . Shortly afterwards, however , the FIS canceled this due to the coronavirus pandemic and declared the season to be over prematurely. Shiffrin therefore no longer had the opportunity to catch up in the overall World Cup (153 points) and in the slalom classification (20 points). For the first time since 2016, she did not win a crystal ball this winter.

Records

In slalom, Mikaela Shiffrin is already the most successful athlete in history. In 2014, at the age of 18, she became the youngest Olympic champion in this discipline. From 2013 to 2019 she was world champion in this discipline four times in a row, only Christl Cranz won four world championship titles in slalom in the 1930s. In addition, Shiffrin is the only one who has won four world titles in a row in a discipline. In the World Cup, she also set numerous records in slalom. She is the record winner in this discipline with 43 victories and, like Vreni Schneider, won the discipline world cup six times. In the 2018/19 season, she won eight slalom races, setting Janica Kostelić's record from the 2000/01 season . In addition, Shiffrin was on the podium in each of the nine races this season and thus set the record of Kostelic ( 2005/06 ) and Vreni Schneider ( 1988/89 ), the 1160 points achieved in the same season in the Slalom World Cup are also the best. On November 28, 2015, she won a World Cup slalom in Aspen with a lead of 3.07 seconds, setting a new record.

In the 2018/19 season, she set a new record with 17 victories of the season in the World Cup, and the 15 victories achieved in the 2018 calendar year are also records. She and Lindsey Vonn ( 2009/10 and 2011/12) are the only ones who could win four crystal balls in one season, in 2018/19 Shiffrin won the overall World Cup as well as the three disciplines in slalom, giant slalom and super-G. She and six other athletes have so far achieved race victories in the five classic disciplines; thanks to further successes in the parallel competition, Shiffrin is the only person in the history of the World Cup who has won all of the current six disciplines. In December 2016 she won three races within three days at Semmering with two giant slaloms and one slalom, something that only Vonn and Katja Seizinger had achieved until then . In the 2018/19 season, Shiffrin competed in 26 races and scored 2204 points, which corresponds to an average of 84.77 points per race, significantly improving Tina Maze's old record of 68.97 points from the 2012/13 season .

Others

In October 2014, a street was named after her in Avon, exactly between her home, Eagle-Vail, and the World Cup venue, Beaver Creek; Avon Public Library is on Mikaela Way. In October 2017 she was awarded the prestigious Skieur d'Or as the most outstanding alpine skier of the past season.

In the summer of 2017, Shiffrin made her relationship with French giant slalom specialist Mathieu Faivre public. The couple's split became known in October 2019.

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , the Czech snowboarder and ski racer Ester Ledecká surprisingly won gold in the Super-G on an old pair of Shiffrins skis that she now owned. According to Ledecká's trainer, Shiffrin's old skis turned out to be the fastest in material tests (both athletes have the same supplier with Atomic ).

Her father died unexpectedly in February 2020 at the age of 65.
