Trude Klecker (born February 7, 1926 in Semmering ) is a former Austrian ski racer . In the first half of the 1950s, she celebrated numerous victories in international races and won seven Austrian championship titles . In 1954 she became world champion in slalom .

Career

As a child, Trude Klecker did several sports, including skiing, which she learned when she was five. She comes from a sports-loving family, her mother Christine was a successful luge athlete . Skiing became her favorite sport during her school days. In her youth she did not have a trainer and learned self-taught professional skiing on the local Hirschenkogel . After the end of the war, she began studying in Vienna , took part in the first races for the academic ski club and in 1948 was third in the giant slalom in Arosa .

Due to her double burden of studying and sport, Klecker was only able to join the national team of the Austrian Ski Association in 1950 at the age of 24 . In 1950 she became Austrian runner-up in the downhill, a year later she even managed to do so in all four disciplines. In 1951 she celebrated her first victories in international races in giant slalom and in the combination of Auron . In the 1951/52 season she won the combined in Zermatt and was second in the giant slalom and downhill at the same location. At the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo in 1952 , she reached fourth place in the giant slalom, but only 24th place in the downhill.

In the 1952/53 season, Klecker became an absolute top runner. She won all three competitions at the Hahnenkamm races in Kitzbühel , won the combination at the Arlberg-Kandahar races in St. Anton and in the slalom of the SDS races in Grindelwald . In addition, she won all Austrian championship races in 1953 . In the winter of 1953/54 she won two more victories in slalom and in the combination of Oppdal, and she celebrated her greatest successes at the 1954 World Cup in Åre , Sweden : in the downhill she won the silver medal and was only slightly inferior to the Swiss Ida Schöpfer . In the giant slalom, on the other hand, she only came in 27th after bad runs and thus missed the chance of a combination medal. In the slalom, Klecker won by over a second over Schöpfer and became world champion. On March 19, 1954, she was voted Austrian Sportswoman of the Year 1953.

In the winter of 1954/55 Klecker could not follow up on their good results and did not achieve any top positions. Even in the 1955/56 season, the Lower Austrian remained without a win in international competitions, but won the Austrian championships in giant slalom and combined. The 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo were also disappointing: In the slalom, the reigning world champion was not allowed to start at all after a failed giant slalom, in the downhill she was twelfth. In the 1956/57 season she achieved several podium places, including second place in the downhill from Zermatt and third places in slalom and combination at the Arlberg-Kandahar races in Chamonix . At the end of winter, she announced her retirement from active ski racing.

After the end of her career, Klecker completed her studies at the University of Vienna and worked as a German teacher in Italy for over 20 years. It was there that she met her future husband.
