Annie Famose (born June 16, 1944 in Jurançon , Département Pyrénées-Atlantiques ) is a former French ski racer .

biography

She celebrated her greatest success at the 1966 World Ski Championships in Portillo when she became world champion in slalom . In addition, she won two silver medals (behind Marielle Goitschel ), in the downhill and in the combined . The silver medal in the downhill was handed in later, however, because at first she appeared on the bronze rank and only moved up in the ranking through the decisions of the FIS , when it turned out that Erika Schinegger is a man.

At the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble , she was second in the giant slalom behind Nancy Greene . They are 2.64 seconds behind, the largest ever recorded in an Olympic or world championship race. In the slalom she won the bronze medal behind Marielle Goitschel and Nancy Greene. In the downhill she came in fifth. Four years later at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , she finished eighth in the downhill on February 5. A few days later, on February 9, it was temporarily banned by the FIS because it had made comments for Radio Television Luxembourg that were commercially exploited.

She was also successful in the Ski World Cup . In the 1967 season she won the Slalom World Cup, but had to share this success with Marielle Goitschel, who was tied on points. She won two World Cup races - on January 10, 1967 the slalom of the SDS races in Grindelwald and on January 26, 1967 the slalom of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains . She also came second eleven times and third nine times. At the French Championships, she won six titles from 1962 to 1965 . She also won the giant slalom in Val-d'Isère on December 17, 1966; thanks to second place in the slalom on December 15th, she also won the combination. In addition, she was the winner of the combination in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains on January 25, 1969 and that of Grindelwald on January 9, 1970 (both were not part of the World Cup).

On January 30, 1969, she suffered a broken fibula and a rupture of the Achilles tendon in her left leg during “non-stop training” for the Arlberg-Kandahar race in St. Anton am Arlberg . At that time she was leading the World Cup ranking with 101 points, ahead of Gertrud Gabl (90 points).

After the 1972 season Famose ended her sporting career. Today she is a successful businesswoman and owns several sports shops and restaurants, as well as a children's holiday village in the Avoriaz ski station in the Haute-Savoie department . In 1968 she was honored as "Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur" and in 2010 as "Officier de la Légion d'honneur".
