Šárka Strachová , b. Šárka Záhrobská [ ˈʃaːrka ˈzaːhrɔpskaː ] (born February 11, 1985 in Benecko ) is a former Czech ski racer . For years she was one of the best athletes in the slalom discipline , in which she was world champion in 2007. In addition, she starts in the disciplines of giant slalom , super-G and super-combination . Until 2013 she competed under the name Záhrobská. Her brother Petr Záhrobský was also a ski racer.

biography

Záhrobská's career is the result of her father's long-term planning. Petr Záhrobský, a lawyer by profession, had never skied before. However, he studied the theoretical basics of alpine skiing in detail and systematically built up the career of his daughter, whose talent he recognized early on, based on his self-taught knowledge. He has always been your personal trainer and leads a small team that does not work with the Czech Ski Association.

In 2000 Záhrobská won the Trofeo Topolino . From November 2000 she took part in FIS races . Four days before her 16th birthday, Záhrobská made headlines when she finished 21st in the giant slalom at the 2001 World Cup in St. Anton am Arlberg - even though she had never competed in a World Cup race before . From January 2002 onwards he played in the European Cup . On December 15, 2002, she took part in a World Cup race for the first time and immediately finished fifth.

As a result, Záhrobská was able to confirm this performance with constant results. In St. Moritz she finished ninth in the giant slalom at the 2003 World Cup . At the Junior World Championships in Maribor the following year, she won a bronze medal in slalom and in combination. After several placements among the top ten, she was finally able to establish herself at the top of the world at the 2005 World Championships in Santa Caterina , when she won the bronze medal in slalom behind Janica Kostelić and Tanja Poutiainen . In the same year, he won the slalom gold medal at the Junior World Championships 2005 in Bardonecchia .

Compared to the previous year, Záhrobská had to record a step backwards in the 2005/06 season: In the World Cup she did not get past eighth place and at the Olympic Winter Games 2006 a 13th place was her best result. The conciliatory conclusion, however, were the giant slalom victories at the national championships in Slovenia and Croatia (before Janica Kostelić ). The following season went far better: On January 4th, 2007 she made a podium in Zagreb for the first time in the World Cup and at the 2007 World Cup in Åre she won the slalom gold medal ahead of the favorite Marlies Schild and Anja Pärson . In the overall slalom World Cup, she took third place.

Záhrobská continued to impress in winter 2007/08 . She consistently drove in the top ten in the slalom and reached fifth place in the overall slalom ranking. In addition, she was able to establish herself in midfield in the giant slalom. After a total of five podium places, she achieved her first long-awaited victory in a World Cup race on November 30, 2008 when she won the slalom in Aspen . With two more podium places, she reached second place in the Slalom World Cup behind Maria Riesch in the 2008/09 season . She won another medal, this time the silver one, in slalom at the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère . At the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver , she secured her first Olympic medal in slalom with bronze. In the Slalom World Cup, Záhrobská came in the 2009/10 season with her second win in Aspen for the fourth time in a row among the top five. At the season finale on March 14, 2010 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Czech team unexpectedly achieved victory over Switzerland and Austria in the team competition, which is only part of the Nations Cup.

The 2010/11 season was a little less successful , in which she went without a podium for the first time in five years and dropped to tenth place in the Slalom World Cup. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , she was twelfth in the slalom. The 2011/12 season was also disappointing. Her best result was the Aspen slalom at the beginning of the season with a 13th place. In July 2012, a benign brain tumor was removed from her. She was able to start snow training again in September and returned to the World Cup in November 2012. During the 2012/13 season, she was able to classify five times in the top 15 despite the lack of training. She married Antonín Strach in April 2013 and has been running under the name Strachová ever since.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Strachová carried the Czech flag at the opening ceremony . On December 29, 2014, after more than four years, she achieved another podium finish with second place in the Kühtai slalom . Strachová won the slalom bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships in Vail / Beaver Creek (her fourth World Championship medal). In the further course of the 2014/15 World Cup season , she finished third twice. In the 2015/16 World Cup season , there were two second and third places, and a second and third place each in the 2016/17 World Cup season . At the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz , Strachová, in fifth place, missed another medal by just three tenths of a second. Two weeks after the end of the season, she announced her retirement from top-class sport.
