Tanja Tuulia Poutiainen (born April 6, 1980 in Rovaniemi ) is a former Finnish ski racer . As the only Finnish female winner and podium driver in history, she was one of the world's best athletes in the giant slalom and slalom disciplines . In total, she won eleven races and three discipline classifications in the World Cup, as well as four medals at world championships and one at the Olympic Games.

biography

Poutiainen won the Trofeo Topolino in 1995 . In 1997 she became junior world champion in slalom and third in super-G . In the same year, she contested her first World Cup race. At the Junior World Championships in 1999 , she reached third place in the giant slalom. She reached her first podium in a World Cup race in the 2001/02 season . Her final breakthrough to the top of the world came in the 2003/04 season when she won her first World Cup slalom in Levi in front of a home crowd.

At the World Ski Championships in Santa Caterina in 2005 , she came second twice; in the giant slalom behind the Swede Anja Pärson and in the slalom behind the Croatian Janica Kostelić . In the 2004/05 season the Finn celebrated her greatest successes to date, winning the giant slalom and slalom world cup. While she secured the Slalom World Cup ahead of Janica Kostelić, the Giant Slalom World Cup was open between her and Anja Pärson until the last race in Lenzerheide . Pärson was leading with a comfortable point advantage before the last race, but could not use this in their favor due to a failed run.

The 2005/06 season was initially unsuccessful for her and she was far from able to build on the performance of the previous season. However, this changed at the 2006 Winter Olympics : In the giant slalom, which was held in Sestriere in thick fog and heavy snowfall, she won the silver medal behind Julia Mancuso . In the 2006/07 season Poutiainen was second in the Giant Slalom World Cup behind Nicole Hosp . In the 2007/08 season the Finn continued to achieve good placements. In addition to winning the Snow Queen Trophy in Zagreb , she was often in the top 10. She was eighth in the overall standings.

In the 2008/09 season , Poutiainen won the Giant Slalom World Cup for the second time with one victory and another four podium places; in the Slalom World Cup she was fourth like last year. At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère - their seventh - Poutiainen won the bronze medal in giant slalom and slalom. The Finn celebrated two World Cup victories in the 2009/2010 season , but in the overall World Cup she did not make it into the top ten for the first time in three years. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , she was sixth in slalom and 13th in giant slalom.

In the 2010/2011 season , Poutiainen achieved second place in the Slalom World Cup and third place in the Giant Slalom World Cup with one victory and another five podium places. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , she finished sixth in the slalom and 13th in the giant slalom - as at the Olympic Games last year. The 2011/12 World Cup winter was somewhat less successful . Poutiainen finished on the podium in two slaloms, but remained without a win for the first time in six years. In the Slalom World Cup she was sixth, in the Giant Slalom World Cup she fell back to 13th place. During the 2012/13 season she managed two slalom podiums. At the penultimate giant slalom of the winter, on March 9, 2013 in Ofterschwang , she tore a cruciate ligament . She then announced that she wanted to start again the following winter. The best result in her last season was a 12th place. On March 16, 2014, she contested her last World Cup race.

Poutiainen impressed not only with her fast, but also safe driving style. From January 4, 2007 to March 18, 2011 she was in 70 World Cup races in a row without failure.
