FIS Children Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FIS Children Cup (until 2016: Trofeo Topolino ) is a sporting event in alpine skiing that is held in Italy . It is considered the unofficial world championship for children aged 11 to 14 years and is in many cases the first race in which future stars of this sport make their first international appearance. The participants include numerous later Olympic and world champions. A slalom and a giant slalom are held in two age categories .

The idea for this event came from the well-known TV presenter Mike Bongiorno and the sports journalist Rolly Marchi in 1957 . It was first held in Courmayeur in 1958 , and since then has always been in places in the province of Trentino ( Monte Bondone , Folgarida , Pinzolo , Valsugana ). The field of participants has been international since 1970. Around 400 children take part every year. A maximum of ten children can start in each country (with the exception of Italy, which has 20 starting places available). In addition to the individual races, there is also a team classification, with Italy providing two teams.

The races are organized under the supervision of the Italian Winter Sports Association FISI and the World Ski Association FIS . For almost six decades there was a cooperation with the Walt Disney Company . Topolino (as Mickey Mouse is called in Italian) was the namesake of the event and acted as a figure of identification. The collaboration ended in 2017 and the races have been referred to as the FIS Children Cup ever since.
