biography

Fanchini comes from Montecampione near Artogne in Valcamonica ( province of Brescia ). In 1999 she attracted attention with victories in the slalom of the Trofeo Topolino and in the giant slalom of the Whistler Cup . In December 2001, at the age of 15, she started taking part in FIS races . On January 18, 2003, it was used for the first time in the European Cup . After that season she was accepted into the national team and joined the GS Flamme Gialle , the sports group of the Guardia di Finanza . Shortly after winning two FIS races, Fanchini made her debut in the World Cup on December 13, 2003 ; in the giant slalom on the Gran Risa in Alta Badia , she finished 43rd. A week later, she achieved her first podium finish in the European Cup (2nd place in the Super-G on the Tonale Pass ). At the Junior World Championship in Maribor in 2004 , she won the gold medal in the Super-G.

Fanchini scored World Cup points for the first time on February 21, 2004 when he finished 26th in the Super-G in Åre . With a total of two podium places, she secured third place in the Super-G discipline of the European Cup. In the 2004/05 season Fanchini established himself in the World Cup and achieved two top 10 finishes towards the end of the season. At the 2005 World Cup in Santa Caterina , she just missed a medal as fourth in the Super-G. She was particularly successful at the Junior World Championships 2005 in Bardonecchia ; she won the gold medal in the downhill and giant slalom as well as the silver medal in the Super-G. In the 2005/06 World Cup , Fanchini was classified in the top ten four times. She took part in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , with eighth place in the giant slalom being her best result. At the end of the season, she won the first two of eleven Italian championship titles to date.

On December 1, 2006 Fanchini was third on the Lake Louise descent for the first time on a World Cup podium. Almost three weeks later, on December 19, she fell on the descent from Val-d'Isère ; she broke her wrist and was briefly passed out. After a break of several weeks, she returned to racing and was three times in the top 10, but broke off the season after the 2007 World Championship in Åre. She missed the start of the 2007/08 World Cup season because she had been diagnosed with an arrhythmia and the Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano had ordered a three-month break on September 28, 2007. She could only start again in January 2008, but took third place in the runs from Sestriere and Crans-Montana .

Two days after finishing second in the Lake Louise Downhill, Fanchini celebrated her first World Cup victory there on December 7, 2008 in the Super-G. In the further course of the 2008/09 World Cup season , three podium places were added. At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère, she won the bronze medal in the downhill. At the beginning of the 2009/10 World Cup winter , Fanchini made it into the top 5 three times (including third place in the Super-G from Haus im Ennstal ). In a fall in the Super-G in St. Moritz on January 31, 2010, she tore a cruciate ligament in both knees . She missed the Winter Olympics in Vancouver . During the entire 2010/11 season she was also out. After almost two years of racing, she made her comeback on January 21, 2012 in Kranjska Gora ; best result in the 2011/12 season was a sixth place.

In the 2012/13 World Cup , Fanchini's results were modest, with only sporadic places among the top 15. Her performance at the 2013 World Cup in Schladming was all the more surprising when she unexpectedly won the silver medal in the downhill behind the sensational French winner Marion Rolland . During the 2013/14 World Cup season she was in the top 10 seven times; best result was fourth place. She also came fourth in the giant slalom at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , where she was eleven hundredths of a second short of the bronze medal. Towards the end of the following season 2014/15 Fanchini finished second in the giant slalom in Åre. In the 2015/16 World Cup she achieved seven top 10 placements. She was particularly successful in La Thuile in mid-February 2016 , where she finished third on the downhill and won the Super-G (her first World Cup victory in more than seven years).

At the beginning of winter 2016/17 , there were two fourth places as the best results. On January 15, 2017, Fanchini had a hard fall during training for the descent in Zauchensee . She suffered a fracture of the upper arm as well as fractures of three transverse processes in the lumbar region . This ended the season prematurely for them. In the 2017/18 World Cup , she achieved three top 10 placements, including third place in the downhill from Bad Kleinkirchheim . At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she was twelfth in the Super-G, while she was eliminated in the downhill.

In December 2019 she became the mother of a son and therefore did not contest any races in the 2019/20 season . On April 22, 2020, she and her sister Elena announced their retirement from competitive sports.
