history

Castle and Market House,
J. F. Kaiser, lithograph 1830
  • The first written mention of the market comes from the year 927 (or 928), after which a Bavarian nobleman left his possessions with a fortified building (in Old High German "hus") to the Archbishop of Salzburg. As part of the diocese, Haus gained in importance in its role as the main parish seat and ecclesiastical center of the Enns Valley, and administered all diocesan parishes from the Styrian-Salzburg border to St. Martin am Grimming and the Sölktäler.
  • In 1786 this area with the main parish Haus was separated from the Archdiocese of Salzburg and transferred to the newly formed Diocese of Leoben .
  • A representative baroque church in the center of the village and the associated Romanesque Katharinenkapelle still bear witness to the ecclesiastical and religious history of the place. Other historical buildings from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries characterize the townscape.

Population development

Since 1869 the population increased steadily from 1314; There were interruptions only from 1880 to 1890 (−2.7%), from 1910 to 1923 (−4.8%) and from 1981 to 1991 (−0.9%). After that there was an increase of 12.6% again up to 2001, which was due to both the positive birth balance and the positive migration balance. The community currently has 2421 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

70% of the population are Roman Catholic and 23% of the population are Protestant .
