The 27th Alpine World Ski Championships took place from January 28th to February 7th, 1982 in Schladming and Haus im Ennstal in Austria .

Nomination from Schladming

At its meeting on February 19, 1978 in Schladming, where the national alpine championships were currently taking place, the presidential conference of the ÖSV determined this location for the application in a vote; Zell am See ("Europe Region") was also available for selection .
The FIS was awarded the contract at its 32nd Congress (May 18-19, 1979 in Nice ), although Valtellina was initially ahead of Schladming with 29 votes; Kranjska Gora was eliminated in the first round; In the second ballot there was again a two-vote lead for Valtellina, Crans-Montana received the fewest votes with six - and of these, five went to Schladming in the third freestyle, which now took the lead 37:35. Briançon (Eastern Alps region Le Briançonnais) dropped out. Only the final brought the final Schladming victory with 44:42.

Organizing Committee and Structures

Minister of Education Dr. Fred Sinowatz opened the general meeting of the organizing committee on November 6, 1981 as its president. It was found that all construction projects - with the exception of the organization center - had already been completed, and the new construction of the sports hotel was carried out with the work given to Dr. Sinowatz followed the handover of the keys. In the sense that this sports hotel will be the headquarters of the FIS during the World Championships , he handed the key to FIS President Dr. Marc Hodler continues.

Innovations

For the first time, the defending champions were admitted outside the usual contingents allowed for each nation, namely those from 1980, since the competitions at the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid had also counted as world championships. With the exception of the men's slalom ( Ingemar Stenmark ), there was no successful title defense, although it must be admitted that there was no defending champion at the start for the women. Hanni Wenzel with three golds was missing due to an injury, Annemarie Moser-Pröll had already ended her career at the end of the 1979/80 season.

There was an innovation in the Alpine Combination, which was held as a separate competition consisting of a shorter descent and two (also slightly shorter) slalom runs. As before, however, the scoring was carried out using a complicated calculation of points. - This change was also agreed at the 1979 FIS Congress in Nice.

Worth mentioning

  • With three gold medals, Erika Hess became the "big star"; Christin Cooper was also able to win three medals.
  • The women's downhill event brought an entire set of medals to the North American continent for the first time.
  • The combination gold medal for Michel Vion was the first major victory for the French men's team since the exclusions in December 1973 (since then there has never been a World Cup race win for the French men's team; this was only reserved for Michel Vion in 1984/85 who won the Lauberhorn combination).
  • Austria's men prolonged their series of gold medals in the downhill, which had been going on since 1974.

Others

  • During the World Championships, the pupils of all elementary, secondary and special schools in the Liezen district had no school.
  • More accommodation options have also been created for the visitors: The “Sporthotel” mentioned in the article above “Organizing Committee and Buildings” increased its number of beds from 220 to 400, the “Alte Post” hotel, which closed three years ago, was reopened and had 85 beds, and the hotel "Zum Stadttor", which is about to go into operation, was to bring 70 more beds.
  • In addition, a casino was set up in the city hall of the World Cup venue from December 25, 1981 to February 14, 1982.
