The 33rd Alpine World Ski Championships took place from February 12th to 25th, 1996 in the Spanish Sierra Nevada near the city of Granada . It should have taken place in 1995 as planned. However, due to the lack of snow in the Sierra Nevada, it had to be canceled on the original date and was postponed for a year.

Rejection 1995

The cancellation was officially announced at 3 p.m. on January 26, 1995 (three days before the official opening). A loss of approx. 17.5 million DM (16.2 million CHF / 130 million schillings) was mentioned. The rejection also placed many demands on the TV stations, who had to dismantle their cameras and transport them home - but also on many other organizations that had erected small buildings on site, e.g. B. the “Austrian Economic Association” with its “Austria House” represented at these events and which had also brought a large amount of food and, above all, drinks to Spain.

opening

The celebration began on February 11, 1996 at 7 p.m. in the “Los Cármenes” football stadium in Granada ( Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes ). The Spanish royal family had taken over the protection of honor, King Juan Carlos I himself spoke the opening words. Also present were Prime Minister Felipe González as well as the Presidents of the IOC, Juan Antonio Samaranch , and the FIS, Marc Hodler . The moderation was carried out by the successful Alpine Olympians Francisco and Blanca Fernandez-Ochoa.

useful information

  • 352 athletes from 50 nations took part in the world championships.
  • On the part of the head of organization Manuel Hernández 200 snow cannons were in use; the budget of 160 million Pesetas was raised by the region of Granada, the country of Andalusia and the Spanish state.
  • The Austrian Ski Association had named 15 men and 9 women, including Stephan Eberharter , who had not contested a World Cup but only a European Cup and "normal" FIS races due to his injuries in recent years and was practically five years after winning the Super- G was allowed to defend it (after it had to be canceled in 1993). In the men's line-up, however , Hannes Trinkl was only intended as a replacement.
  • The ARD had paid about 1.43 million DM for the broadcast of the men's combination slalom, but because of the changed start time on the evening of February 20, it was unable to show why it was due to other fixed programs (it was also Shrove Tuesday) it was announced that recourse claims would be asserted with the FIS.

The men's downhill could not be held on time because no training sessions were possible, which was not due to bad weather, but rather to the rather reduced diligence of the staff responsible for the preparation. This led to protests from TV advertisers. So there was only a time run from 10 o'clock on the actual day of the race.

Injuries

  • There was a momentous incident on February 14th during the women's first downhill training on the “Velera” slope, where the Russian runner Tatjana Lebedewa at 100 km / h with the former head trainer who crossed the slope (until 1972) and the USA (1974– 1991) and now USA-FIS functionary Harald Schönherr from Park City collided. Lebedewa suffered a broken tibia and fibula on the right, Fairhair suffered a fragmented fracture in the left lower leg; both were taken to the University Hospital in Granada and operated on there. Lebedewa, at No. 30, was the last runner before an interruption. Schönhaar had been on the piste with the German FIS official Dieter Wieder and probably misunderstood a radio message and believed that the track was free.
  • On February 10, 1996, Alexandra Meissnitzer slipped on a staircase in front of the team hotel , contracted an ankle sprain, which had a very negative effect on her performance in the races she contested and led to her being in pain for the second round in the Giant slalom no longer competed.
  • On February 10th, Martina Ertl suffered a left bruised boot in a fall during giant slalom training; a softer shoe was therefore “tinkered” for her.
  • On February 17th, Peter Rzehak tore the partilla tendon in his right knee in a training fall. After initial treatment in Granada, he was transferred to the University Clinic in Innsbruck, where Dr. Karl Bernedetto operates.
  • Bruno Kernen suffered a sprain in the combined slalom; a ruff was attached to him.

Others

  • Michael Tritscher had decided not to participate in the World Cup in advance because the risk was too high.
  • Renate Götschl slept through the award ceremony for the women's combination in which she came fourth. The 20-year-old had never been in this position at a major event and was therefore of the opinion that only the three medal winners were invited.
  • For the 20th time there was a so-called “Austria House” (costs around 8 million schillings, 3.5 million of which were financed by the Chamber of Commerce, the rest of 34 Austrian companies), which was even opened by King Juan Carlos when it was opened was visited. The reason for this was that the Austrians had built this house in 1995 despite the cancellation, which impressed the monarch.
  • The majority of Austrian journalists boycotted a “Spanish-Austrian evening” on February 21st, because a major headline in the Granada local newspaper “Ideal” let the readership know about Austria's history that “they hadn't known where Granada was for a long time is actually (maybe in Africa?) ”or that“ Austria was still a barbarian when Granada was the world center for culture and economy ”. But on February 21st there was a reconciliation between ÖSV boss Peter Schröcksnadel and World Cup boss Jeronimo Paez, who toasted with beer at an Austrian-Spanish evening in the Austria House.

Worth mentioning

The men's combination slalom was the first ever World Cup competition in the history of Alpine World Ski Championships, which took place in the evenings under floodlights . This slalom was also pushed in on a replacement date.

this and that

  • The first part of the Austrian team (women) arrived late in Spain on February 8th because the flight in Zurich had been missed; Parts of the luggage also arrived late or were not on site a day later. Katja Seizinger's skis had disappeared from the DSV team. A curiosity was that the main competitors, the US girls, the ladies of the DSV and the Austrians were accommodated in a common hotel.
  • The World Cup debut was tough for Claudia Riegler , who only came for the technical competitions , because she had to change hotels three times (in the hotel that was first booked for February 12th there was still nothing available), the wax material had landed in the official team hotel, where it had been taken by part of the Italian team that had already left for Japan, but was found after all.
  • Austria's standard bearer was Stephan Eberharter.

For the ÖSV men, the Super-G was already lost in the upper part of the route with its many changes of direction, because the intermediate times achieved there with ranks 15 (Wirth), 21 (Knauss) and 32 (Mader) were too much ballast that could in the race to catch up (second best intermediate times in the following sections) can no longer be made up for.
