Thomas Grandi (born December 27, 1972 in Bozen , Italy ) is a former Canadian ski racer . He specialized in the disciplines of giant slalom and slalom . During his career, he won two world cup races.
biography
Thomas Grandi, whose parents are also from Bolzano, won the overall and giant slalom classification of the Nor-Am Cup in the 1992/93 and 1993/94 seasons . He won his first points in the World Cup in March 1993 in the giant slalom in Oppdal . He reached the first World Cup podium on November 22, 1997 as third in the Park City giant slalom . In the following years he achieved top 10 placings again and again, but only after more than six years did he achieve a podium again on January 25, 2004 in the slalom in Kitzbühel with second place behind the Finn Kalle Palander .
In the 2004/05 season , the Canadian managed the big surprise. He won the two giant slaloms in Alta Badia and Flachau within 48 hours . At the end of the season he was able to place third in the Giant Slalom World Cup behind Benjamin Raich and Bode Miller . At the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2005 , he took fifth place in the giant slalom and the newly created team competition , and he finished sixth in the slalom.
Grandi is married to cross-country skier Sara Renner and became a father for the first time in February 2007. A month later, he announced his temporary retirement from ski racing and then took over the management of the Ski Association of the Province of Alberta . In the summer of 2008, he announced his comeback as he planned to take part in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . During the 2008/09 season, however, he could only classify himself twice in the points. In mid-March 2009, he finally announced his final resignation.
Grandi is an athlete ambassador for the development aid organization Right To Play .
