Economy and tourism
The tourist development in Flachau began in the mid-1950s. A visit to the Flachau Rifle Club and the Flachau Trachtenmusikkapelle in Nuremberg and the Munich Oktoberfest aroused interest in Flachau among the German population. A German travel agency included the community in its summer program and organized vacation trips to Flachau. In 1955 the place had 170 guest beds, 1491 people spent their vacation in Flachau for around two to three weeks each. Infrastructure, restaurants and hotels relevant to tourism were built up step by step.
Today tourism is the municipality's most important economic pillar. Flachau now has almost 10,000 guest beds. In 2017, 1.2 million overnight stays with 245,000 arrivals were counted, with one third of the guests coming in the summer months and two thirds spending their winter holidays in Flachau.
