Dorfgastein [ ˈdɔɐ̯fɡastaɪ̯n ] is the first and with 1622 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) also the smallest municipality in the Gastein Valley in the St. Johann im Pongau district in Austria .

Community structure

The municipality includes the following six localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Dorfgastein (967)
  • Klammstein (59)
  • Luggau (185)
  • Maierhofen (197)
  • Unterberg (154)

The community consists of the cadastral communities Dorfgastein and Klammstein.

The districts are Dorfgastein, Luggau ( cadastral community Dorfgastein) and Maierhofen, Unterberg (cadastral community Klammstein). Until the end of 2002 the community belonged to the Gastein judicial district .

The community has been part of the judicial district of Sankt Johann im Pongau since 2003 .

history

In 1212 there was a documentary mention of the use of the Gasteiner Gorge as a riding and mule track. 1342 was the first documentary mention as ze Dorff in the oldest Gastein mining regulations. In 1350 the church of the Rupertus Church in Dorff was founded .

Until 1520, Klammstein Castle was the administrative center, seat of the archbishop's keeper of Gastein, toll and security point at the valley entrance. In 1735 the first school lessons took place in Dorfgastein, in 1921 there was electric light in the classes. In 1893 a telegraph office was set up in Dorfgastein. The school building opened in 1927. In 1959 the first ski lift in Dorfgastein opened.

1954-2018 of operational ORF the Senderbahn Luxkogel , a single lane gondola for materials and people of "Seilbahnbau de Pretis, Villach" for maintenance of the - there are lasting - radio and TV station with no road connection at the top of the 1,824 m high, steep Luxkogels.

Winter sports

The Großarltal – Dorfgastein ski area , part of Ski amadé, extends over the Kreuzkogel , from 885 m near Großarl to an altitude of 2027  m , where the connection to Großarltal to Großarl is. About 80 kilometers of slopes are accessible by five cable cars, eight chair lifts and five drag lifts. The transport capacity is around 29,000 people per hour. Shuttle buses connect Dorfgastein with the Schloßalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel ski area ( Bad Gastein , Bad Hofgastein ).

Dorfgastein has a kindergarten and a primary school , after which the children either have to commute to Bad Hofgastein to the secondary school or to St. Johann im Pongau to the grammar school .

power plant

The Austrian Federal Forests have been operating the Luggauerbach small hydropower plant in the Luggau district since March 2018 with an output of 1.1 MW and an annual generation of 4,000 MWh. The six-nozzle Pelton turbine is operated with a vertical axis.
