The Hochgründeck is a mountain ( 1827  m above sea level ) in the Salzburg Pongau and one of the highest forested mountains in Europe. There is a shelter and a church on top of it. geography

The Hochgründeck belongs to the Fritztal Mountains in the eastern part of the Salzburg Slate Alps in the Grauwackenzone . The summit is located at the intersection of the municipal boundaries of Bischofshofen , St. Johann im Pongau and Hüttau . From the summit region there is a sweeping panoramic view: to the north the view goes to the Tennengebirge , to the west to the Hochkönig , to the southwest and south to the Hohe Tauern (to Kitzsteinhorn , Großglockner and Wiesbachhorn ) and to the east to the Radstädter and Schladminger Tauern as well as the Dachstein and the Gosaukamm .

The Raidlgraben rises at around 1600 meters .

Development

The normal route to the Hochgründeck leads from Bischofshofen over the Buchberg . A longer ascent option is available from St. Johann im Pongau , among others . The refuge, the Heinrich-Kiener-Haus , is open in the summer season, from Christmas to Epiphany and by appointment.

Not far from the hut is the Hochgründeck Church of Peace , which was built between 2003 and 2004 on the initiative of the hut owner Hermann Hinterhölzl . Archbishop Alois Kothgasser consecrated the church on September 5, 2004 to the saint and patron saint of the woodcutters Vincent of Valencia . In the church there is a relic of Saint Edith Stein .
