The Dachstein-Südwandbahn or Dachstein Gletscherbahn opens up the southern part of the Dachstein massif from the Styrian town of Ramsau am Dachstein , where the summit station is on the municipality border with Obertraun .
investment
The two-lane aerial tramway with one suspension cable per lane leads without a support and with a ground clearance of up to 210 m over the south face of the Dachstein to the Hunerkogel mountain station , which is exactly on the border between Styria and Upper Austria . The cable car is in operation in the summer and winter seasons and is the feeder for the Dachstein Glacier ski area on the Upper Austrian side , and leads into the core zone of the UNESCO World Heritage area of Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut . It crosses the natural monument of the Dachstein South Crash and Edelgrieß Glacier , into which it offers a special insight.
history
The beginnings of the Dachstein development began in 1877 with the construction of the Simonyhütte . In 1961, Dachsteinstraße was built from Ramsau to Türlwaldhütte. The road was a prerequisite for the later construction of the Dachstein Südwandbahn. The construction of the aerial tramway lasted from 1966 to 1969. The valley station can only be reached via the Dachsteinstraße toll road.
For the mountain station on the Hunerkogel, the summit of the originally 2694 m high mountain had to be blown away. The summit next to the station has been 2687 m since then . Since there was no power supply on the mountain, it was powered by diesel engines .
The Dachstein Gletscherbahn was owned by the Upper Austrian Dachstein Tourismus AG until 2003 and was taken over by the Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahn-Gesellschaft in Schladming in 2003 , which also operates the Planai and Hochwurzen mountain railways on the south side of the Enns Valley. They now invested a lot in the infrastructure. In the same year, a power line was laid on the Hunerkogel, so that the cable car could be converted to an electric drive in 2004.
In 2010 a new suspension cable was installed on track 2 and its basic tension increased by 7 t to 93 t. On May 18, 2013, the railway received new all-round glazed gondolas from Carvatech , one of the two is the world's first with a balcony. With this, there is the possibility of accommodating up to ten people on the roof outdoors on an attached, also glazed balcony. The entry and exit of passengers on the balcony is via separate stairs and platforms in the stations. The speed was increased from 36 km / h to 43 km / h, but the gondolas, which are now 2.2 t heavier, only hold 50 to 55 people (cabin no.2 with balcony) or 43 people (cabin no.1 without Balcony); the loss in transport performance due to the smaller gondola capacities was partially compensated for by increasing the speed of travel. The carrying rope diameter is 56 mm, that of the pull rope is 31 mm, that of the counter rope is 26 mm.
Touristic attractions
A viewing platform, the Dachstein Skywalk , was opened directly at the mountain station in August 2005 . The Dachstein Ice Palace was built into the glacier in 2007, 3 minutes' walk away. In July 2013, a 100-meter-long suspension bridge with the staircase to nowhere was opened - it connects the mountain station with the ice palace. In 2013, a circular route around the mountain station of the Dachstein-Südwandbahn was set up.
