The natural monument Dachsteinsüdabsturz and Edelgriessgletscher is a protected area on the Dachstein in Styria , in the municipality of Ramsau .

Location and landscape

The area is located near the border triangle Styria - Upper Austria - Salzburg . The protected area extends southeast of the Dachstein summit , on the main ridge from the Hunerscharte to the Koppenkarstein ( 2868  m above sea level ), and then down below the Hohen Gamsfeldspitze past into the Edelgrieß high valley , and below the (Niederen) Türlspitz into the stone field below the Dachstein south wall hut . It covers 225.71  hectares .

History and scope of protection

The Koppenkarstein from the Hochwurzenhütte via Schladming, on the left the rest of the Edelgrieß glacier (2011)

The natural monument was designated in 1965 as NDM No. 784 (nature conservation book: St-GB-014 / Ramsau am Dachstein).

The natural monument is an important geological site, it shows a complete cross-section through the rock sequence of Triassic Dachstein Massive: When Südwandhütte are Werfener layers , the base layer of the entire Limestone Alps , then follow the footwall Gutensteiner dolomite , Steinalmkalk , Hallstatt lime , Raminger lime and Wettersteinkalk in the Türlspitz Group, Wettersteindolomit in Edelgriess and Dachstein limestone in massive and banked formation in Koppenkarstein. In addition, the Edelgriess glacier is also expressly mentioned, which represents the Ice Ages . It is the only glacier in Styria, but today it is only preserved as a small remnant of the glacier on the Koppenkarstein, some of the Edelgrieß is still dead ice .

The area is excessively large for the natural monument class - which usually only represents small-scale natural structures - but together with the neighboring natural monument Dachsteinsüdwand in the west (NDM No. 783, which is about the same size) it is intended to emphasize the coherence of the geological evidence of the time.

The area is located in the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Cultural Landscape Hallstatt – Dachstein / Salzkammergut ( WHS 806 ), which honors “natural landscape” as well as “evidence of human activity”, and also belongs to the nature reserve north-western part of the municipality of Ramsau am Dachstein (plant protection area, NSG 02c ) and to the Dachstein – Salzkammergut landscape protection area ( Salzkammergut-Ost , LS 14a ), which means that it is under very strict and comprehensive protection. On the Upper Austrian side, the European and nature reserve Dachstein ( bird protection and FFH area , AT3101000 / EU02 , N098 ) borders.

Development

The Dachstein Südwandbahn cable car runs through the protected area and crosses the steep walls. At the summit station on the Hunerkogel, the Dachstein Skywalk was built in 2005 , a viewing platform that protrudes into the south walls, supplemented in 2013 with the stairs to nowhere and a suspension bridge, and thus offers an extraordinary overview of the protected area. Mountaineers can also access the Hunerkogel mountain station via the Rosemariestollen . The very difficult Irg via ferrata has been leading from Edelgrieß to the Großer Koppenkarstein since 2004 .

Thanks to this development, even for the inexperienced, the natural monument is one of the most visited natural phenomena in the state, and represents the Dachstein as one of the landmarks of Styria Space for priority nature conservation measures

The natural monument can be experienced especially with the panorama gondola with balcony
