The Dachstein Skywalk is a viewing platform on the south side of the mountain station of the Dachstein-Südwandbahn cable car on the Hunerkogel in the Upper Austrian Dachstein Glacier ski area .

General

The Skywalk is located at around 2700  m , right next to the mountain station. It was constructed as a balcony in 2005 and protrudes over the 250-meter vertically sloping rock face of the Hunerkogel . Part of the floor platform is made of glass. The height of the viewing platform above ground is significantly greater than that of Niagara Falls or the Iguazú Falls .

On clear days you can see the whole Tauern with the Großglockner and Großvenediger and south to Triglav in Slovenia and north over the granite and gneiss highlands to the Czech Republic from the Skywalk . In addition to an extraordinary view of the distance, the Skywalk also offers a direct insight into the natural monument of the Dachstein South Crash and Edelgrieß Glacier , as a geotope of the structure of the Limestone Alps and, together with the Dachstein summit and the Dachstein South Face , a landmark of Styria.

The facility was built in four months and opened in August 2005. The 40-ton steel structure can withstand wind speeds of 210 km / h, can carry loads of up to 8 meters of snow and is designed for 150 people. The platform has a total length of 17 meters, the last four meters of which protrude over the edge of the rock.

The Skywalk is located directly on the border of the core zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Hallstatt – Dachstein / Salzkammergut cultural landscape , in both federal states it is also a nature reserve ( Dachstein , also a European protected area , and the north-western part of the municipality of Ramsau am Dachstein , a plant protection area).

The intensive tourist development is accompanied by a clear flow of visitors, which on the one hand makes the idea of nature conservation tangible to a broad public and makes it a local economic factor, on the other hand, by concentrating, it keeps other areas undisturbed.

Other attractions

The suspension bridge on the Dachstein, left the stairs to nowhere

As early as 2007, corridors and chambers were cut under the glacier near the mountain station and made accessible to visitors under the name Ice Palace . Ice art works are presented in the chambers.

In addition to the viewing platform, a circular path around the mountain station of the Dachstein-Südwandbahn was built in 2013.

A suspension bridge that connects the mountain station with the Ice Palace is at 2700 m above sea level and runs up to 400 m above ground. Opened in July 2013, it is the highest suspension bridge in Austria. At its end, the staircase was added to nothing , 14 glass steps down, which intensify the feeling of standing over the abyss.
