Lochside was a whiskey distillery in the town of Montrose , Angus , Scotland . It should not be confused with the whiskey distillery of the same name, which existed in Campbeltown between 1830 and 1852 .

history

The Lochside distillery was originally a brewery founded in the early 19th century ( Deuchars brewery). However, this was closed in 1957 and Joseph Hobbs converted the business into a whiskey distillery. He first installed a 20 m high coffey still , a system for the cost-effective production of grain whiskey , which in the first few years was the distillery's only product. Then two coarse stills ( wash stills ) and two spirit stills were purchased, which enabled the production of malt whiskey. In 1973 the distillery was taken over by the Spanish company Destilerias y Crianza del Whiskey . The distillery was closed in 1992 and sold to Allied Domecq in 1994 . However, it was never opened again. First, the attached warehouse was demolished in 1999 and finally the remaining buildings in 2005.

production

The water required came from a groundwater well. A coffee still was installed for the production of grain whiskey. Malt whiskey was distilled over two pairs of wash and spirit stills .

Bottlings

Much of the whiskey produced was used to make blends , especially Macnab's blend . However, there were regular original bottlings as single malts as well as various bottlings by independent bottlers, which are still sometimes found in stores today.
