Campbeltown ( Gaelic : Ceann Loch Chille Chiarain ) is a village in the Council Area Argyll and Bute , Scotland .
It is located on the Campbeltown Loch on the Kintyre Peninsula and was formerly known for its shipbuilding and fishing. Today whiskey is made there in the distilleries Springbank , Glen Scotia and Glengyle . The area around Campbeltown is also managed as an independent Scottish whiskey region .
Until the 17th century the place was called Kinlochkilkerran . In 2011 there were 4,852 people living in Campbeltown.
