Glengyle is a whiskey distillery in Campbeltown , Scotland, founded in 1872 by William Mitchell and completed in 1873 . The distillery buildings are classified in category B in the Scottish monument lists. The company was closed for many decades in the 20th century. Since the recently reopened, the whiskey produced has been marketed under the name Kilkerran .

history

The Glengyle distillery originated as a split from the Springbank distillery at the same location by William Mitchell, who was a son of the Springbank founder Archibald Mitchell.

When the whiskey industry was hit by the economic depression and prohibition in the USA in the 1910s, the distillery had to be sold to West Highland Malt in 1919 due to poor business . Only a short time later, in 1924, the distillery changed hands again. This shut down the distillery's production only a year later and sold the remaining stocks of the whiskey.

An attempt by Maurice Bloch to reopen the distillery was abandoned when the Second World War broke out. At the time, Bloch and his brother already owned the Glen Scotia distillery, which was also located in Campbeltown . A second attempt at revitalization in the 1950s by Campbell Henderson Ltd. also failed.

In 2000, Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd. finally founded the company . The relatively well-preserved buildings of the historic Glengyle distillery, which in the meantime had served as an agricultural warehouse, were renovated and rebuilt into a distillery. The stills came from the Ben Wyvis distillery , which had only been in use there for a few years before it was closed in 1976. However, the stills have been reworked for re-use.

Glengyle is now connected to the operators of Springbank again , but is run as a separate company. Operations are run by Hedley Wright, who also runs Springbank; he is a descendant of Glengyle founder William Mitchell.

production

Production began in 2004 with the manufacture of the first distillate. The distillery only produces two months a year, which is enough for an annual production of 60,000 liters. A whiskey called Kilkerran was bottled on May 5, 2007, exactly after the minimum maturation period of three years specified for whiskeys, and visitors can try it in the distillery. The distillery is the first to (re) open in Scotland after the turn of the millennium.

The whiskey from the Glengyle distillery does not bear the name of the distillery, but is sold under the name Kilkerran. On the one hand, this is because it is a tradition in the Campbeltown region not to provide whiskeys with a “Glen”, the Gaelic word for valley, in their name. In addition, the naming rights could not be acquired. There is already a vatted malt, which is also called Glengyle.

The 12-year-old Kilkerran has been the first standard whiskey from the Glengyle distillery since August 12, 2016. The Kilkerran 12yo is the successor to the WIP (Work in Progress) series, which was used to track the maturation of the whiskeys from the Campbeltown distillery over the years. The 12-year-old single malt whiskey will appear annually in the future.
