The A83 branches off from the A82 road coming from Glasgow in the small town of Tarbet , after the junction of the A814 road bypasses the north end of Loch Long , a deeply cut sea bay, and leads over the pass Rest and Be Thankful (245 m) through the Glen Kinglas valley (where the A815 road branches off ) to Loch Fyne and follows its north-west bank to Inveraray . There the A819 road branches off , which leads north to the A85 road . The A83 continues, partly at a distance, on the north- west bank of Loch Fyne , leaves the A816 road to Oban in the bay of Lochgilphead and then follows the west bank of Loch Fyne to the south. In Tarbert she leaves Loch Fyne and crosses the bay West Loch Tarbert , which she follows on the east side to the Sound of Gigha and further along the west coast of the Kintyre peninsula . At Kilchenzie it leaves the west coast and moves through the peninsula to Campbeltown on the east coast, where it ends and the B842 branches off to the south end of the peninsula (near the Mull of Kintyre ). Campbeltown has ferry services to Ardrossan (on the A78 road ) and Ballycastle in Northern Ireland .
