Tarbet ( Gaelic : Tairbeart Loch Laomainn ), not to be confused with Tarbert , is a town in the east of the Scottish Council Area Argyll and Bute . It is located on the northwest shore of Loch Lomond about 21 kilometers north of Helensburgh and 23 kilometers east of Inveraray . In 1971 Tarbet had 292 inhabitants. The town is no longer listed separately in more recent census data.

Tarbet is at the east end of a valley that runs along the shortest route between Lake Loch Lomond and the inlet of Loch Long near Arrochar . In the past, ships were dragged overland through this approximately 2.5 km long valley to switch between the two bodies of water.

South of Tarbet is the Stuckgowan House, a monument from the highest Scottish monument category A. This is a country house built around 1820 in the Tudor Gothic style on the shores of Loch Lomond.

traffic

The junction of the A83 from the A82 is in Tarbet . While the A82 coming from Glasgow continues north via Fort William to Inverness , the A83 runs west via Inveraray and Lochgilphead and connects the Kintyre peninsula to Campbeltown with the Central Belt . At the west end of Tarbet there is a train station which the village shares with neighboring Arrochar. This is served by all trains on the West Highland Line including the Caledonian Sleeper . There has been a jetty in Tarbet since the 19th century, where numerous ferries used to stop on Loch Lomond.
