Lochgilphead ( Gaelic : Ceann Loch Gilb ) is a village in the Scottish Council Area Argyll and Bute . It lies on the shores of the Loch Gilp inlet . Lochgilphead is 27 miles from Oban . In 2011 it had a population of 2300 inhabitants. It was originally a fishing village. In Kilmory Castle just south of Lochgilphead, today the administration of Argyll and Bute is housed.

Lochgilphead is just off the A83 , which connects the Kintyre Peninsula with the Central Belt . The A816 leads north and becomes the A85 in Oban .
