The A85 road is an A-road in Scotland . It runs in a west-east direction across the southern Highlands from the west coast in Oban via Crieff and Perth to Dundee on the Firth of Tay . It is one of the most important cross-connections north of the Central Belt . Originally the road ran continuously from Oban to Dundee, but the section between Perth and the western outskirts of Dundee became the M90 or A90 in the course of the expansion of the continuous connection from Edinburgh to Aberdeen assigned.

course

In Oban, the A85 begins at Argyll Square, south of the city center at the terminus of the branch line of the West Highland Line to Oban. From there it leads north through the city center, partly through parallel one-way streets. Oban leaves the A85 to the northeast, past Dunbeg it reaches the south bank of Loch Etive at its confluence with the Firth of Lorn . In Connel the north towards branches Ballachulish leading A828 , and crossed Loch Etive on the Connel Bridge . The A85 continues on the south bank of Loch Etive and passes under the Connel Bridge. The bank leaves the A85 at Taynuilt and runs parallel to the River Awe and the West Highland Line further east. Below the Ben Cruachan , the road reaches the north bank of Loch Awe and passes the storage power plant there on the Falls of Cruachan .

The A85 in Glen Dochart near Crianlarich

At the east end of Loch Awe, the A85 passes the ruins of Kilchurn Castle . Shortly thereafter, the A819 branches off to the south in the direction of Inveraray . In the valley, first of the River Orchy and then the River Lochy , the road continues to the east via the small village of Dalmally , always parallel to the railway line, to the junction with the A82 , just before Tyndrum . The watershed between the Scottish Sea and the North Sea also lies in this area . The A82 and A85 run together until shortly before Crianlarich . Shortly after the A82 branches off to the south, the A85 passes the Crianlarich rail junction and passes under the branch of the West Highland Line in the direction of Fort William .

From Crianlarich the A85 runs further east in the valley of the River Tay , which is called the River Dochart above Loch Tay . The valley known as Glen Dochart is bordered on both sides by mountains, including several Munros such as the 1174 meter high Ben More to the south or the Meall Glas to the north, 959 meters high . With Loch Dochart and Loch Iubhair , the A85 passes two smaller lakes. The A85 here partly uses the embankment of the railway line of the former Callander and Oban Railway from Callander to Crianlarich, which was closed in 1965 as a result of the Beeching ax . At the Lix Toll junction , the A827 branches off towards Killin and Loch Tay. The A85 turns southeast into the Glen Ogle . At Lochearnhead the A84 branches off towards Callander and Stirling . There the road also reaches the east end of Loch Earn , the north bank of which it follows the entire length to the east. From St Fillans , the A85 runs in the valley of the River Earn , which it follows to Comrie . From Comrie, the A85 follows the River Earn at a somewhat greater distance to Crieff .

The A85 at Milton of Abercairny, between Crieff and Perth

In Crieff the A822 branches off to the south , which creates a cross connection to the A9 . A few kilometers east of Crieff, the A822 branches off to the north at the small settlement of Gilmerton; it provides connections in the direction of Dunkeld and Aberfeldy . As far as Perth , the A85 runs through agricultural areas to the east, only interrupted by the village of Methven . Shortly before Perth crosses the A9, which has been developed like a motorway and is connected to the A85 via a driveway. The A85 runs through Perth, partly parallel to the A912 and A93 . There is a possibility of bypassing the city center for through traffic via the A9 and the M90 .

The A85 on Riverside Drive in Dundee, just before passing under the Firth of Tay Bridge

Southeast of Perth, the A85 meets the M90, which will soon merge into the A90 and has taken over the old route of the A85. The A90 is expanded highway-like, just before Dundee begins at the roundabout Swallow Roundabout the remainder section of the A85 to the city center of Dundee. This section runs along the north bank of the Firth of Tay and passes Dundee Airport . The end of the A85 is at Dundee Railway Station, having previously passed the A85 under the north end of the Firth of Tay Bridge . The A991 , Dundee's inner city ring, takes the A85 traffic.
