The historic archway over the A819 at its start in Inveraray

The road begins in Inveraray , the seat of the Dukes of Argyll , where it branches off from the A83 and directly at the junction passes the historic archway built around 1790 based on plans by Robert Mylne . It leads steadily upwards through the Glen Aray parallel to the River Aray towards the north. In doing so, it largely follows an old military road laid out around 1750 as a result of the Jacobite uprisings and passes individual scattered settlements and cottages. Shortly before the small settlement of Cladich, which is bypassed on a bypass, the A819 reaches its highest point. From there it falls steadily downwards and follows the east bank of Loch Awe , roughly to the northeast . This section along the shore was not built until the 1930s. Before that, the A819 followed the old military road further east, which merged into the A85 in the center of Dalmally . Shortly before the end, she crosses the branch of the West Highland Line to Oban. The A819 joins the A85 at the small settlement of Kinachreachan, about halfway between Dalmally and Lochawe .
