The archway to the north

The archway of Inveraray is located in the Scottish town of Inveraray . It is at the head of Dalmally Road , on which the A819 runs through the city. Not far from the archway is the shore of Loch Fyne directly on the A83 , which connects the south of the Argyll and Bute region to the Kintyre peninsula with the Central Belt . It is directly adjacent to the hotel The Great Inn .

As with numerous buildings in the planned city of Inveraray, the architect Robert Mylne was responsible for the planning. Construction was completed around 1790. In 1966 the archway was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. The structure is in poor condition due to traffic and weather conditions.

description

The structure consists of a high segment arch, which is bordered on both sides by smaller arches. The outer arches are at an obtuse angle to the central arch. Today they lead pedestrian paths while the street runs through the central arch. The outer arches end with a simple decorative ribbon. This is continued over the central, higher arch. There are blind ox eyes on both sides above the ribbon . It is crowned with simple ashlar masonry. The structure is plastered using the traditional Harling technique.
