The Great Inn

The Great Inn , originally The Inveraray Inn , now the Argyll Arms Hotel , is a hotel in the Scottish town of Inveraray . It is located near the shore of Loch Fyne, not far from the jetty, directly on the A83 , which connects the south of the Argyll and Bute region to the Kintyre peninsula with the Central Belt . To the east, the building is bordered by the city's ornamental wall , which spans in several arches over The Ave street , and the archway over the A819 . In 1966, The Great Inn was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest category A.

The Great Inn, completed in 1757, is one of the oldest buildings in the planned city of Inveraray. Archibald Campbell, the 3rd  Duke of Argyll, ordered the construction of a guest house . The guests of the house include James Boswell and Samuel Johnson , who stopped there in 1773 on their return journey from the Hebrides . In 1787, the poet Robert Burns stayed at what was then the Inveraray Inn on his first trip through the Highlands . In 1803, the poet brother and sister William and Dorothy Wordsworth stayed for some time in the hotel. Most recently, John Rickman , Robert Southey and Thomas Telford were guests of the hotel. In 1955 a fire destroyed parts of the building.

description

The three-story building shows typical features of Georgian architecture . The entrance of the elongated house is in the middle at the front. The numerous lattice windows are framed by corrugated ashlar stones and contrasted in color by painting. The Great Inn ends with a slate-covered gable roof . At the back there are several wings and outbuildings. On the sides of Dalmally Road and on the back there are semicircular protruding stairwells that end with semi-conical roofs. One of the extensions has a hipped roof . The facades are partly plastered in the traditional way and partly using the traditional Harling technique.
