The M90 motorway ( English for 'M90 Motorway') in Scotland is located between Edinburgh and Perth and is the northernmost British motorway . The part from Inverkeithing to behind Milnathort was opened to traffic in the years 1964–1972, the extension to Perth dragged on until 1980.
Seamlessly following the A90 from Edinburgh , the M90 begins in Inverkeithing at the north end of the Forth Road Bridge and runs past Dunfermline , Cowdenbeath and Kinross to Perth, where it splits into two branches shortly before the end. The north-west branch is part of the Perth bypass and connects to the A9 trunk road coming from Stirling and heading north . The north-east branch merges seamlessly into the A90 (formerly M85 and A85) towards Dundee and Aberdeen .
The M90 is considered to be one of the UK's below average highways in terms of development. Between junctions 1 and 2, there is only a little more than 100 m long common entrance / exit area for both junctions. There are no hard shoulders on a 13-kilometer stretch, there are only breakdown bays every 1/4 mile (400 meters). Between Milnathort and Bridge of Earn is the sharpest turn on a UK motorway as the motorway negotiates the foothills of the Ochil Hills , with a radius of 694.5m (a minimum radius of 914m was the standard at the time of construction). In the same area is the steepest section of the UK motorway network, with almost 6% on some exits.
As part of the construction of the new road bridge over the Firth of Forth (official name: Queensferry Crossing , formerly Forth Replacement Crossing), the motorway was extended southwards in order to connect with the M9 motorway west of Edinburgh . The existing motorway slip road to the M9 was partially rededicated to the M90. Since the bridge was completed on August 30, 2017, the M90 has been directly connected to the rest of the UK motorway network.
