Kinross ( Scottish Gaelic Ceann Rois ) is a town of 4,891 inhabitants in the Scottish council area of Perth and Kinross in the east of the Central Lowlands ..
geography
Kinross is twelve kilometers north of Dunfermline , 15 kilometers west of Glenrothes and 20 kilometers south of Perth in slightly hilly terrain. The Loch Leven is located in close proximity to the east. The M90 motorway touches the city in the west.
history
Kinross was the historic capital of traditional Kinross-shire County between 1890 and 1929 . After the connection to the M90 motorway, many people moved to the city, which is thus conveniently located.
During World War II , the nearby Balado Park was used as a military airfield, sold in 2006, and is now used to host open-air music festivals .
Today Kinross develops tourist activities, in particular offering boat trips around Loch Leven and to nearby Loch Leven Castle , where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned from the summer of 1567 to the spring of 1568. Various walking and cycling tours are also offered, as well as visits to the gardens of Kinross House , one of the most important in Scotland.
The area around Kinross also serves as wintering quarters for thousands of geese .
