Glenrothes ( Scottish Gaelic Gleann Ràthais ) is a Scottish city with 39,277 inhabitants and the administrative seat of the Council Area Fife . It was created in 1948 as a planned town from several smaller farming communities.
Originally the most important industries were paper making and coal mining . The population therefore consisted largely of miners who came from western Scotland, especially from the Glasgow area . Today Glenrothes is characterized by numerous electrical factories. This development made the city the center of the Fife Council. Fife House and other Fife Council buildings are in the city center.
To the north of the center lie Balfarg and Balbirnie , two apparently related Neolithic burial sites and cult sites.
