Ebru Umar

Ebru Umar (born May 20, 1970 in The Hague ) is a Dutch columnist of Turkish descent.

Her mother is an artist, her father a surgeon. She studied business administration .

Umar writes columns for various Dutch newspapers and magazines, including Algemeen Dagblad and Het Parool . She conducts interviews for the magazine Libelle .

In her texts she takes a position on what she believes to be “dictatorial manhood” and the lack of human rights in Islam . Ebru Umar speaks of an incomplete integration among Islamic immigrants in Europe and points to what she believes are contradictions that exist between Islam and a modern world.

Ebru Umar was considered a close friend of Theo van Gogh and in 2005, after the murder, took his column position in the Dutch free newspaper metro .

On the night of April 24, 2016, while she was on vacation in the western coastal city of Kuşadası , Turkey , Umar was arrested by the police and interrogated by the public prosecutor. She was released one day from prison but was not allowed to leave Turkey. Two weeks later she was allowed to leave. Shortly before, she had published a critical comment on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in metro and distributed excerpts via Twitter. The Dutch embassy was turned on. On April 25, 2016, Umar's apartment in Amsterdam was broken into, "everything was turned upside down", a computer was stolen and a wall was smeared with the swear word "Hoer" (Dutch for "whore").
